Government Assistance

posted 18th May
After completing a report for my economics class, I have discovered some very interesting information.

This past year, inflation (the average raise of prices in our economy) rates rose to 4%, while the averagecompany's cost of living increase was only 2.3%.

Based on these statistics, should the governmentadjust qualifications for federal assistance, such as WIC, Pell Grants, Food Stamps,Daycare Assistance, etc...? Or is it the individual's responsibility to live more money-conscious?

We live in a society where we consume more than we make. I feel people need to learn to be more money conscience, and if that means spending less on items that you don't really need, then so be it.

No, I don't think that the government should adjust the qualifications, people need to learn to manage their money better.

Personally, I think it is great that the programs exist to help. However, many people are on it way too long and don't use it for help they use it as a way of life. That being said, I don't think the government really has the funds to increase the amount they are already "giving" as help. Government help is NOT owed. Especially if you have never worked a day in your life.

Just my opinion

i think they need to adjust it. my family is fairly well off but, we still could use some assistance. we don't qualify at the current settings but, even just a little help would make us alot more comfortable,

What about federal pell grants for college? The price of college has risen far faster than most other things. Should they change how they decide who qualifies for federal assistance for education?

i agree on this there needs to be reform on how it's run. too many people abuse it. but it should def be adjusted to help more people who really need it.

I am sorry, but what assistance are you wishing for. If your family is well off, and not destitude, I can't see where food stamps should be given to you.

I can see the pell grant but that should be based on more than just $$ status, such as grades and public involvment.

I think pell grants for college are different. You're right college tuition has risen waaaaaaaaay higher than inflation. I think that the grant income limits should be raised because it's an investment into our country to have more people educated and being more productive.

Yes. Pell grants for college are a different story. It needs to be based on more than current $$ situation. A student applying fora pell grant should be qualified based on grades, community activity, if they have criminal records and so on.

I do think they should adjust the income that qualifies people for foodstamps...since finding out I was preggo a 2nd time(7 yrs after my last) i had to go to part time at my job for health reasons(I just couldn;t handle all the strenous walking up and down stairs anymore) I took a 1700.00 paycut a month to do this and thought for sure I'd qualify for FS...NOPE i make 10.00 too much a month this based on the fact that I bring home 823.00 AFTER taxes and that is too much!!?? Gas is freakin 4.00 a gallon! I think the program should be made more of a HAND UP like it was originally started out as rather than a HAND OUT I know too many people living off government asst no jobs popping out babies and their excuse for not getting a job...they'd cut my FS! that irritates me!

That is pretty weak if they have an exact cutoff for fs. It seems like they should stagger it based on income.

i didn't say foodstamps. daycare asistance would sure as hell help. we make plenty of money but, between a mortgage, car and over 1200.00 a month in child care. it doesn't go far. we don't currently qualify for ccds by about 400.00. i think goverment assistance needs to look at the whole pictyre and not just what a family makes before taxes.

I have an aquaintance who is in a similar situation. She and her husband have two kids. He lost his good job and had to take a lower-paying job. Here is the problem; when she works, they make too much to qualify for daycare assistance (we all know how expensive that is), and they cannot afford it. So, she has to stay home, and he does not make enough to support all of them, and they must have assistance. I know that my daycare cost for one child for seven months was almost 7,000 dollars. The weekly rate rose 20 dollars between start and finish.
Shouldn't this also be taken into account?
