Blighted Ovum

posted 19th Aug '12
For those of you who've been diagnosed with a blighted ovum and chose to naturally miscarry (sorry if that's the wrong term) how long did it take to pass? I am supposed to be in my 9th-10th week of pregnancy, but almost two weeks ago my doctor diagnosed a blighted ovum. The sac was measuring approximately 5w5d last Tuesday... Just wondering how long until I would pass it if I did not choose a d&c...

Also, if you had a d&c how painful was the recovery after you wake up? I'm terrified of both of my options

I have had a total of three blighted ovums.. I am very sorry for your loss!! It is very difficult! I had a D&C with the first two.. The first was at what was supposed to be about 11 weeks.. My second was at about 8 weeks.. The recovery was not very painful for me (with the pain meds I was given!) Mostly just mild to pretty painful period cramps. I bled for a couple weeks after and the worst part was the emotional pain for me.. The last I only passed naturally because it happened a few days before my D&C was scheduled at around 6 weeks.. Again I am very sorry for your loss and if you have any more questions I have had a lot of experience with blighted ovums due to my past.

I had a blighted ovum. d&c was easy recovery I think. No initial pain, same day surgery so home for dinner. Did your dr. tell you your hcg levels? I think that might help in deciding what you want to do. Dr. told me that with a blighted ovum your levels could continue to rise for awhile until they decided to stop so a natural m/c could take longer than you'd like if that's the case for you.

Was it more painful naturally?

No, he didn't tell me the levels. He did however say that letting it go naturally could take a while because my body hasn't realized that there is no baby. In 11 days the sac went from the size of a 5 week sac to a 5w5d sac, so its still growing. I'm just so bummed because its already been in there 5 weeks basically doing nothing, and I don't know how much longer I can wait around... Wondering if every little pain or strange feeling is the start of it.

I go tomorrow for another scan and to discuss the options again... I just don't want to make the wrong decision.

It was.. But I think that is because I chose not to get any pain meds that day when I called my dr to tell him i was bleeding.. I ended up calling him at 2am and begging for that prescription! (I felt so bad) but he did it and I really needed them!

Similar. I had the d&c July 27th and it looks like my levels are still too high for AF to start let alone getting pos. on HPTs. It is superrrr frustrating. I didn't have any pain even after the d&c I used the motrin for migraines last week but that was it, never had cramping I bled for 6 days and stopped for 4 and bled again for 5. if you're not comfortable yet, you don't have to make a decision, but be prepared your levels could be higher than you think and it takes forever in some cases for them to come down. I've read anywhere from 2wks-8wks+ That's the worst part I think- waiting and the toll it takes on you emotionally- no matter what you choose. so sorry for your loss!!

Thank you both. I think tomorrow after I talk to my doctor again I will go ahead and schedule the d&c. Mainly I was concerned about pain and recovery.

I'm terrified of it happening in public when I've got my daughter with me. Idk what it will be like so of course I'm imagining the worst.

Thanks again, and sorry for your losses.

Yeah.. With my last, even though I knew it was happening again it was still very emotional.. This was in Aug 2009 and I still remember vividly.. I was walking from my kitchen to my living room that morning, just wearing a t-shirt and panties.. I looked down and saw a huge redspot.. I started bawling.. My SO was at work and it was very scary..

mine is working out of state right now, so he hasn't been able to be here for much. He came in the day after the doctor told me what was going on and then left out again two days later. He'll be gone for 2 weeks.

last year I had a miscarriage. I had a D&E they put me to sleep during the procedure and afterward no pain to little pain. I might of took a dose of ibuprofen but I didnt fill my script for pain meds. I am sorry for your loss. The emotional pain is the hardest for me and the healing process took me a while.

I had my d&c yesterday. I bled a little more than expected but other than that all is good.

I haven't had any pain, and my bleeding has almost stopped.. I didn't expect it to be this....easy? Idk.

When I woke up, I woke up crying   physically its been easy, emotionally not so much.
