A few questions about transitioning

posted 18th May
So Brookleynn is 3 months and a few days now. I know things are going to start to change, and of course I am going to ask her Doctor, but I'd like you ladies' input. So...a few questions.

1) When should I start giving her cereal and how much? (Like, how many ounces of formula and how much cereal with it? I don't want to make her belly too full.

2) Brookleynn has been drooling a TON and trying to chew on her fist and my shoulder, lol, anything she can. Her gums look a little swollen. Is she teething this early?

3) Should I switch the slow flow nipple to fast flow now?

4) When do most babies start burping on their own and don't need to be burped anymore?

Sorry for all the questions...I appreciate any replies.

1. Don't start cereal or any other solids until at least 6 months unless your pediatrician recommends it.

2. She could be starting teething. It's a little early than normal, but all babies are a little different.

3. If she's doing fine with the slow flow, then stick with it.

4. usually 4-6 months.

They recommend starting at 6 months but you don't HAVE to wait that long.  You can start when they are 4 months if they sit supported, and there are a few other signs of readiness.  There are a lot of people that do wait the 6 months but you don't have to.

Hey lovey!! My doc, or Rhyan's better yet, told me whenever she is ready he's giving the okay for cereal, even if that means four months. So ask the pedi and see when they think she's ready. All the other questions, I'm as lost as you and will be asking your advice in two months!!

lol.  My grandmother had been telling me to start Nathan on cereal since he was about 3 m onths but I waited till 4.  Its not that long haha.  My sister started her son on cereal in a bottle at 2 weeks.  Now he won't eat a bottle without some cereal in it.

1) When should I start giving her cereal and how much? Discuss it with your doctor at 4 month check up, many babies don't start till closer to 6 months.

2) Brookleynn has been drooling a TON and trying to chew on her fist and my shoulder, lol, anything she can. Her gums look a little swollen. Is she teething this early? Very possible, babies can be born with teeth. Put a wet wash cloth in the freezer for a while and let her chew up on or buy the teething ring things, but they don't seem to stay cold for more than 10 minutes for me. Tylenol can help if she gets really crabby.

3) Should I switch the slow flow nipple to fast flow now? I tried stage 2 when my son was 3 months he choked and now at 7 months he is still doing just fine with stage 1. So if she isn't having a hard time sucking I would leave it.

4) When do most babies start burping on their own and don't need to be burped anymore? At 7 months I am still burping I did stop around 5 months for a day or two but he kept spitting up. Usually a few pats after eating he burps. I think my daughter stopped around 4-5 months. All depends on baby.
