The Patch (for smoking)

posted 19th Aug
I'm in my 6th month of pregnancy and unfortunately I'm still smoking. I feel guilty everyday about it, but depression keep me beating myself up about other things so of course I dart for a cigarette when I get stressed. Baby seems to be fine, the ultrasounds look great, he kicks alot all the time, we are both doing well. But i dont want to smoke for the last trimester. I was on the phone with the pregnancy center/obgyn i go to and asked them if they could give me the patch to make me quit. The nurse said (and im sick of hearing this) that they dont normally prescribe the patch because the first patch is such a high dose of nicotene and it could harm the baby. Ok..I'm actually inhaling this smurf and that could be harming my baby and smoking another cigarette is not a win win. GIVE ME THE SmUrfING PATCH. anyway, she prescribed me Wellbutrin over the phone. I understand why she did that instead but I talked to another nurse the other day and she was appalled that the nurse would do that, without seeing if it is compatible with me and my baby or not.

ANYWAY, I'm convinced the patch is the only thing that will truly make me stop. I even called the Quit Now hotline for South Carolina, and she said they were all out of everything that helps, but that they DID have a bunch of papers they could mail be explaining why i should stop. NO. I have read and read and read WHY smoking is bad during pregnancy, but its just another day of smurf and stress and im still smoking, so reading about it aint gonna help.

Weaning myself off doesnt work either. Ive tried that for years. Smurf just gets to me too easily and I will kick doors down for a cigarette when im mad or sad or even happy or whatever.

I go to my doctor on Thursday and im HOPING he will listen to me about it. If he tries to say Wellbutrin is my best bet, then oh well, I guess I'm screwed.

Buying the patch is like 50 or 60 smurfing dollars. do i have that? Nope. I have 7 dollars to my name.

Angerrrr

You need to just quit! Why would you want the patch knowing that it can be harmful to your baby!? I quit smoking as soon as I found out I was pregnant. Yeah its hard but your poor baby is suffering because you choose to smoke! You can't say that he is healthy because you had an u/s and he moves just fine.

It's not as easy for some people... Atleast she is trying to get help to quit.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. My OB won't even bring up that I'm still smoking because she just doesn't care. I was on the patch a while ago & I can tell you that you'll get your nicotine but you'll still have that feeling like you NEED to smoke a cigarette. Maybe try talking to your family doctor about it? My family doctor has prescribed me the gum before.

Get off your high horse. If you don't have anything helpful to say then go away.

Actually, her continuing to smoke is probably better for the baby vs quitting cold turkey and stressing the smurf out. So, how about you kindly shut the smurf up.

Op, I honestly don't think the patch is right. How about gum?

I quit with my son at 6 months because it started making me sick and even though he was fully healthy on the ultrasounds, he still ended up in the NICU with breathing problems. Yes it is hard to quit, but if you really set your mind to do it then it is possible, just stop buying them and if someone does it around you, then ask them to leave or you leave. I smoked for 7 years before i quit and still haven't started back up since march 2011

the reason im convinced the patch is the only thing i have left to rely on is because its still some nicotene, and the doses of it get smaller and smaller. Id be committed to it I know I would. but the deep seeded reasons i smoke goes back 10 years. Ive always put cigarettes first. While traveling, others would want to buy alcohol or food, but i needed to know we had cigarettes before anything else. I read on the quit smoking support thread about a girl who's baby went into shock because she was about 15-19 weeks and quit, then her baby went into shock. So she kept smoking after she went to the hospital of course. I have dug this hole myself, i know, but im READY to get out of it. Id torchure myself if my baby had breathing problems after birth, because knowing its all my fault. anyway, i wont take wellbutrin, cant just QUIT-as one mother on here suggested-like i havent been hearing that the past 6 months-but im totally stuck on wanting the patch. its better than smoking, and its proven effective by so many. but pregnant moms, not so sure. ill let ya know if it screws us up or actually works, then Crystal Reed can shut the smurf up.

was kinda hoping though that a mom on here would post and say "yeah the patch worked for me while pregnant" but i guess not lol ill still give it a go anyway. theres no more reasons i can come up with to justify smoking while pregnant. this week his amniotic fluid will come out, as i read, and there's room for air. ill be the first one to step up and say im a horrible person if i continue smoking throughout my third trimester. but for now, i think im doing pretty good. just talking about it right now is giving me confidence.

It doesn't make you a horrible person. I know a ton of people who have smoked through their pregnancy & had happy, healthy, perfect babies. There's a chance of something being wrong with the baby weather you smoke or not. Of course it would be better if you didn't smoke but that doesn't make you a bad person.
