Is the 40mm a good lens? What is it mainly used for? The guy at the store said it is good for black and white?

CC? And which do you prefer?
I can't be sure about the WB, I'm on my mom's wonky computer, lol.
I really don't do much editing either   Mostly just correcting the WB, editing out blemishes. I don't really know what else needs to be done. Feel free to re-edit and re-
post and let me know what you did, I still need to learn, lol.

Dangit, I tried, lol! I finally got my camera to shoot in manual outside without blowing the image (took the advice about the aperture and SS), but they all came out pretty cool because it was icky-ish outside.

No it was 40mm. He kept calling it the "pancake" lens. I was just curious since i have never heard much about it.

Oh ok. I just looked up the "pancake" lenses recently, I've never used one

Quoting 3LittleMonkeys:" I was looking into the 700 but that'll do haha. Go big or go home, right? I just want to ensue my pictures ... [snip!] ... want to ensue my pictures really pop. My body is about to bite it plus the focus is wonky and would hate for that to mess me up"

If I was you, I might still go with the D700 over the D800. The D800 has huge file sizes and you'll for sure need LR4 to be able to open the RAW files. Because the file sizes have so many pixels, every false thing you do or every imperfection in the lens is magnified so when looking at 100%, you may get frustrated at the beginning. I think I would have gone crazy if I had made my transition from cropped sensor to full frame direct to the D800. Going from the D90 to the D700 was so fun. The D700 is a super easy to use and great full frame camera. I noticed the difference in my pictures instantly with no learning curve from a cropped sensor to the full frame. Don't get me wrong, the D800 is a great camera and even outshines the D700 IF you get everything perfect (lens, no camera shake, right settings etc.) But if you want instant "wow", I would advise you to go with the D700.
