We didn't have a white Christmas either. But, got a freaking snow storm the day after >:[
Friday night, I got to drive home from going out with my mom in almost zero visibility. I was literally driving in the middle of the highway so I wouldn't go into a ditch

We managed almost 6 inches. I want to build a snowman sometime today.

Thanks
That's what I was going to look into getting some umbrellas.

People are crazy! Idk how you could call yourself starting a business and charging people right after you get your first dslr. I mean it took me a while to really be able to use mine correctly and get really good images and that was after doing research and reading tons of stuff and lots of practice. You can't just pic one up and take professional pictures. I don't claim to be an expert but thy just seems crazy to me.

I know a lot of people that have done that though lol

Unfortunately, there are no rules or laws requiring a certain level of skill before attempting to take money from people. But you have to look at it this way.. The people who can't see the quality difference anyway aren't the ideal clients for a photographer who knows what they're doing. Not everybody has the eye or values quality photography. The same people who think just having a 'nice camera' means you can go into business are the people who think all it TAKES is hiring someone with a 'nice camera'. They deserve each other.

And most people won't pay someone who had no portfolio unless they are dirty cheap...then hey, you didn't lose much. i seriously just do free pics for one of my friends (well before bed rest) just to try and improve. I am not good enough to charge but i am interested enough to try and improve. I do know enough now from you ladies on who is pay worthy lol

I know, right?

I didn't start shooting for other people until 1.5 yrs after I bought my DSLR. And that was after I had shot film for 5 years. I was reluctant to even shoot for other people but DH's friend insisted I did their family photos, then he spread his word like wild fire and people wanted to pay so I figured I should probably buy a business license. Shooting for free is how I started. I did tons, and tons.. but the key is just to treat it just like you ARE getting money. Contracts/model releases, set expectations, etc.

When I did free shoots, I was TRYING to treat it like a paid shoot but the clients weren't going with that. I think they had the mentality of "Oh we didn't pay her so what do we have to lose for badgering her and asking for all of this other smurf?"

That does suck. I never really ran into any issues myself.

I'm just joining the group, but I did this same thing when I was starting out. It was so hard for me to gain support from my husband and family because they felt like I was just letting people take advantage of me without understanding that people definitely need to see your work (which you have to build up) before hiring and paying you.
