I wanted to do this for our family portrait but the road to get to Dollar General was blocked off for the Christmas parade  

Hi, ladies. I was just wondering if anyone could possibly help me to get an image like this.


I have it on manual, ISO 400, aperture 4.5. Sat DH a few feet away from the tree. I can get the lights to look like that in the background but can't seem to get his face even in the picture, it's just all black. What am I doing wrong?  


ETA: I'm using a 18-55mm lens :/ All I got, unfortunately.

You need some additional light on his face.. a flash or something.

So, if I held a flash light on his face or something? I don't have an external flash

That could possibly work. How slow have you tried your shutter speed?

1/125. I tried having him hold the iPad under his face, already, lol. Just made him look creepy.

yeah you don't want underlighting lol. I might try to go like 1/80th. I don't think it's going to make a HUGE difference but every little bit helps. But you definitely want some light. Do you have any lamps?

Thank you. I'm not happy with a couple because my reflector didn't work at all.

Yeah you can really tell with the photos. They look very well behaved and amicable.
