And for these photos I was backed all the way against the wall, and if I put him farther away he would have been out of the sunlight. I really wish I could go outside and play with my lens... damn rain.

You can buy off brand and they are okay but if one malfunctions and damages your camera, it will not be covered by any kind of warranty. However, the Canon ones do last longer.
