I have a 35mm lens but debating on getting a 85mm lens. Is there much difference? I'm not sure if it's worth getting.

There's a huge difference, the 35mm is far far wider than 85mm.

Do you think it's worth getting?

Well, do you find yourself in a lot of tight situations where you wished you had a wider lens? I mean 35mm is HUGELY wider.. Do you have a local camera store that you could compare a 50mm and 35mm ?

Sometimes I do. I don't think I have one, sadly. I gotta look up more reviews of the 85mm. I just don't want to be disappointed if my pictures look mainly the same as ones taken with my 35mm

for me it was. I love my 85mm. all my most recent shoots were taken with it. it's a great outdoor portrait lens.

I'm thinking I'll get some fun background fabric...and I'm going to get enough to get full body pictures but I may have to just do closer portaits. I'm going to diy a pvc pipe background stand and check out Hobby Lobby or somewhere for the fabric. She wants me to do this photo booth type thing AND take pictures of the usual reception things like cake cutting, first dance, the bridal party at the head table. I'm thinking I'll catch those things in the beginning and then set up on my tripod for group photos after an hour or so. Will it be tacky if I bring a work light and not an actual photogtraphy light?

oh and the 35mm is hugely wider then the 85mm? if that's the case then it probably isn't for me. I find myself in tight situations as is and I don't want to be even more limited.

Do you own a 50mm or a 35mm lens as well?

Okay I got confused. You own a 35mm now and you are thinking of buying an 85mm? I thought it was vice versa lol.

they won't. the 85mm gives a much more buttery bokeh than the 35mm.

Oh okay. Well you definitely won't have a lot of room to shoot indoors with an 85mm on a crop sensor. So yeah 35mm shows a lot more.. 85mm is much longer. Yes, it does give you a lot better compression/bokeh though, even at the same aperture. Long focal length + same aperture = better bokeh and subject separation.

Thanks for the input ladies. I'm going to look into it and see if it's right for me.

what do you mean by "work light"? Whatever light you use will affect the white balance in the pictures. Mixed lighting is the hardest to get a correct white balance on. So if you have lights from the reception area on and then are using a different type of light for photographing and the two different types of lighting are hitting your subjects, you may end up with a weird white balance that makes editing a nightmare. That's just something to watch out for and think about.
