I think I'm gonna go with the refurbished body and a new 50mm 1.8

That sounds like the way to go with me   the images you'll produce with the 50mm will outshine the kit lens, and you'll be able to do more in low light. Plus the D7k is a beast in low light anyway

Sweet, I think I'm set on that then. I am a hermit who hates the sun, so low light is going to be my biggest battle. I def over went my budget though so that means no camera bag....which makes me nervous about dust and stuff

I have the full frame D800 and have now gotten the D5100 as my private use camera. I really like it. It's a good camera. IF you are thinking of getting serious with photography though and can afford paying the higher price for the D7000, I would advise you to get that. It can do most things a pro camera can do except it is a cropped sensor.

If the only reason is the lenses, that wouldn't make a difference to me. All the lenses I currently have for my D800 work on my D5100 as well. If you want nice lenses, they are the ones that come with a motor in them anyways. There are cheaper versions that don't have the motor but I haven't tried any of them. Like I said, all my lenses work on my D5100.

ETA my first camera was the D90 which is the older version of the D7000. I did not get a kit lens, just the body with a 35mm 1.8 and a 50mm 1.8. That was perfect.

I didn't want to get a Nikon model that doesn't have an AF motor built into it because the lenses with Af-s motors are drastically more expensive, (for example the 50mm is 129 and its 216 if you get the built in motor) I know they work fine on other models but I would have to put aside alot more money everytime I wanted to buy another lens, if I got one that didnt have a motor built in then I would have no auto focus at all. I need auto focus, my eye sight is horrible.

I was also looking into the 35mm 1.8 I read in some article by a photographer that she used it to shoot her kids and it was a nice "go-to" lens. I can only get one lens right now and I don't know which one to get, I def want to own both of them but one is going to have to come later on.

So I have a question for you ladies, if the lighting isn't good is it ok to turn your iso up pretty high? I always thought it would cause a lot of noise but as I've been reading through this thread I've seen some articles posted about having your iso up isn't that bad of a thing. Sometimes it seems to be the only way to get decent pictures.
