They sell creams and oinments for the nipples, I know at babies r us it's in the same area as the pumps. Sorry I have a week or two before I get to that part so I don't know which ones work the best

when i was breastfeeding my first the nurses gave me cool teabags to put on my nipples. The tannic acid in the tea helps calm the nerves, plus the coolness of the teabgas feels good.

My Dr. prescribed lanolin. You can get it over the counter, but the prescribed one really works!

Talk to the lactation nurse in your NICU. They can tell you what works best and usually give you a hefty amount of samples for free! With my daughter They gave me this jelly type stuff that I guess is used for burns and it gave me SO much relief! Anyways, I think that is the best place to go for help, especially since it's free =)

yes lactation nurses are the best, and love mothers who pump and breastfed, they will give you every thing you need!

I don't know what kind of pump you are using, but when my daughter was in the picu, I was pumping milk, and I tried the hospital grade medela pump and it was just too much suction for me, even on the lowest setting.  It was super fast, of course, but I found it much more comfortable to use my own pump, which is a hand held avent isis.  After I got it, I saw that they have now come out with a similar pump that is manual AND battery operated.  It "memorizes" your pumping pattern and then does the work for you.  Can't attest to how that pump works, as I used the one taht is only manual.  However, I did experience a slow down in milk production when I was exclusively pumping, so my suggestion would be use the hospital grade pump AND this pump and switch every other pumping session...that way you get the efficiency of the electric hospital pump, but the comfort of a manual every other time.  Also, liek everyone else suggested, lanolin!  I also saw that there is now a lanolin spray, which would probabloy be even better, bc sometimes it hurts just to put the lanolin on.  I do not remember which company makes the spray, but I would imagine it is either medela or lanisoh.  Babies R Us would proabbly carry it.  I also agree w/ everyone else that said talk to your lactation consultant at the hospital.  They are an incredible resource.  Are you getting nursing mother meals in the nicu?  I was fed 3 x a day in the picu, I don't knwo if that is at every hospital, but it is worth asking about if htey havent' offered it to you.  I was able to talk to 2 nutritionists, as well as 2 different lactation consultants.

Another thing others said is to take the free stuff from the hospital...I was provided with nursing pads, maternity pads (for the post partum bleeding), 3 meals a day, access to the hospital grade pump, and a room to sleep in.  Ask the lactation consultant or a nurse if any of these are available for you.  Good luck & I hope you guys are out of the NICU soon!
