Kindergarten punishment!

posted 18th Aug '12
At my nephews school, the book of papers for parents to read says that if they get in trouble so many times(3 or 4) then they will be forced to walk laps at recess.

How would you feel about this form of punishment?

I would not approve. Physical activities should never be used as punishments.

Honestly I wouldn't care. As long as they weren't like deprived of water or forced to run or anything.

It's stupid imo. I don't understand consequences that have nothing to do with the behavior though.

They shouldn't be punishing at all, I just sign the papers for my son's prek in which the state that kids are talked to and they do not perform any punishments.

It is up to the parent, not the school!!

Not at that age, at my sons school they had kids sit out on a bench at recess or stay in class and finish whatever task they didn't do while clowning around, (dean did a lot of that last year)

Our school district does that. I ran a lot of laps in middle school.

A lot of kids has excess energy I think getting their bodies moving and getting some burnt off is better then sitting at a desk in detention.

I would say good luck some kid just died after being made to run for several hours in her back yard as a punishment and the mother and grandmother are facing charges its not a punishment i would ever use with mine or someone else child

i agree! and honestly, with the obesity "epidemic" happening, i definitely wouldn't want my child to think of physical activity being a form of punishment.

My son is starting kindergarten this year, and I'm not sure how I would feel if his school did that.

Well that's extreme. A kid walking laps is different. I remember reading the article about the girl that was definite abuse.

Good point.

I thought coming up with solutions to problems was the norm these days, instead of trying to scare kids into behavior through these bizarre punishments.

That's how we feel. My nephew was diagnosed with ADHD this Summer and they are still working on an effective medicine for him. I know he's going to have trouble sitting still or listening on some days and I just hope they understand his issues. Although, I don't think they should try to force ANY 5 year old to walk laps.
