Implanon...what medications interfere with this?
posted 17th Aug
I have Implanon & am wondering what medications can interfere with it? Such as antibiotics & etc. I have been looking, but haven't had much luck finding this information.

i have done alot of research and from what i have gathered, the antibiotic cephalexin can lower the effectiveness of implanon and result in pregnancy.Im taking it right now and on the implanon. i asked my doctor also and she said to use back up while taking antibiotics.

Ok Thank You. I was on the antibiotic Clarithromycin twice a day for 14 days so I was just wondering. I can't remember if DH & I had sex during that time frame or not so I'll take a test to make sure. Idk why I didn't think about this sooner...probably bc I was really sick.

no problem. DH and i had sex a few days after i started the antibiotic, and then i remembered that antibiotics can effect birth control, but i didnt know if it applied to the implanon. So i called my doctor and asked the nurse...she was like" hold on let me google it"...
i was like "um ...ok?" lol then she said " i dont know? if your really worried about it, then just use condoms.".....i was like, im worried about it because i have already had sex. shes like....."well i guess take a test and use back up from now on"... So i did my OWN research and found that it can cause pregnancy. So good luck! hope your not pregnant. lol. i hope im not either!

Lol Thank You. I hope your not either. I want a third, but a year or two from now lol. I did some googling with the actual name of the antibiotic & it said it shouldn't cause pregnancy, but idk how reliable the websites were bc I've never heard of them before & they were kind of hard to understand. So I'll just buy some tests & take one. Now it's got me thinking how long the Implanon could have been ineffective for? I was on it for 2 weeks & if I remember correctly with the pill you are supposed to use protection up until two weeks after you are done taking the antibiotic? Oh boy. I started taking the antibiotic on July 13th & stopped on the 27th. Only reason I started worrying about it again is bc I am exhausted, moody & my face is breaking out, but I know that can be caused by other things. I'll just take a test very soon.

antibiotics can affect any birth control but with implanon its not likely Because implanon is not hormonal...Also i was on antibiotics for over 5 months and never had to use back up birth control..Both of my doctors said there was no need to worry

Ok Thank You! Good to know. I'm still gonna take a test bc I'm having weird symptoms, but I'd be shocked if I actually was pregnant.

Oh I think I'm supposed to get mine out by October 2014, but I'm thinking about getting it out in September or October of 2013 to start trying for baby #3. Do you know how long it can take to get pregnant after getting it out? When I got off the pill before getting pregnant with my 1st we tried for 3 months before I actually got pregnant, but with my 2nd I was on the mini pill & was blessed with getting pregnant right away right after I stopped taking it.

Mine is 2014 to but we are going to start trying for a baby..and since its not a hormone birth control, you can get pregnant the month you take it out..most women from what i have read and heard from people and my doctors alot of women get pregnant within the first three months of being off.

That is really good to know. I've kind of been having baby fever for the past month or so, but I know it will probably be better to wait another year. I picked up some First Response Tests at the store tonight just to make sure I'm not pregnant with this thing in my arm. Gonna test in the morning if I remember.

I have been having extreme baby fever for a few months now, but SO and I decided that it would be better to wait until we are further in school and we have $2,000 saved before we start trying and then save as i am pregnant for those nine months

That sounds like a good plan. This past week has been the worst for me with the baby fever. I think it's bc my boys just turned 3 & 1...Their birthdays are 5 days apart. We want to wait untill my youngest is a little older & life is less stressful. Crazy family problems since April that we have been sucked into as usual. I would like life to be a lot calmer before we try for baby #3.
