Autism new behavior question

posted 16th Aug '12
So my son has autism and is almost 3. We just got a new car and its higher up and every place we go by that he is familiar with he thinks we have to go to it and look around or he freaks out. He also freaks out if we dont drive the places he thinks we are supposed too. How do you help this? One other question he has started bringing us stuff like a cup we are drinking out of etc. and freaks out if we dont have it. Like he thinks everybody has to have their stuff with them and panics if they dont. Ever heard of that and how do u deal with it?

The only thing I found to help is pictures made like a schedule. My daughter is high functioning so worded scheduling is working now, but in the beginning it was pictures with time added. For example if just going to the store I would have pic of house then time followed by a picture of store then time and so on it worked but it took a while for her to get it. I don't know if it will work but I noticed mine loves routine and this helped establish a routine. I hope it gets better for you.

You may want try getting w couple of those plastic placemats wrote your name (maybe a picture of you tapped to it) and put your stuff on it, show him look this is mommys stuff... Just keep showing him and putting it back down

And print out images of places you go when you leave tell him where you are going and show/hand him the icon when he wants a different place just keep showing/telling him where you are going if you are going multiple places put them on a strip in order and tell him first ____next____ last_____

For us this meat we went to jamba every time we were going somewhere non-preferred but It also ended the screaming and fights to not get in the car when we went somewhere he didn't want to go...

Also if it's a coffee cup etc and it's gone show him it's empty and teach him out put it on the sink/counter

Ok thanks i will try those. I was working on his pics for traveling earlier just need a few more. He already knows when something is empty to put it in the sink. Its mostly cups and keys phone etc. he brings it all to the person it belongs too and wants it near you.

For the direction issues, I seriously wish I knew, because my kid still screams even when he knows where we are going but doesn't think we should go. As for the other, I find approaching it very calmly and persistently works for us. Like if he brings you your cup, just say "no thanks not now" and keep setting it down, and or walk away-because I know in our case if you let him get his way with annoying/disruptive behavior it takes months and months to correct it. I also try and switch things up often for my son so he doesn't get so stuck on things. For instance I use different plates for him (now that he decided to eat again, lol) I go different ways to stores , and I even take him out a different door sometimes-you get the drift. Recently we were camping with my friends and all of our kids were sitting on the deck in a row and that pleased Brady (my kid) so much he was jumping and flapping, but all hell broke loose when one of the kids got up and he was grabbing them and shoving them back into position. So because we are mean, lol we told the kids to all switch spots and he got upset again, but after the 4th switch of positions Brady decided that it wasn't worth it anymore. We kept it light and were all laughing and trying to show Brady it was a game, but the point is that he got over it waaaay faster than if we would have indulged in his bossy pushy behavior.
