1 year olds with asthma

For mama's who have/had a toddler with asthma, what were the first signs that made you suspect it?
DD has been coughing when I put her down at night and sometimes in the mornings when she first wakes up. It's a dry cough and otherwise she seems fine. Asthma does not run in my family, but I believe it does in BD's family. How is it diagnosed? Is there a test the doctor can do?
