Vegans and Household Pests

posted 17th May
Weird topic, I know, but I was recently wondering about this.

Vegans generally abstain from all animal products--including things like wearing wool or leather. They tend todisagree with animal cruelty, killing, and captivity.

That being the case, what happens when a vegan gets rats in their abode? Or ants? Roaches? Mice? How does a vegan handle household pests, in other words.

This is strictly a matter of curiosity--but if you are against killing, it seems that your options for ridding yourself of such things are fairly limited. I know (from very recent experience) that they make cruelty free mouse traps, but for other pests, this isn't really the case.

So, you handfull of Gaga Vegans out there--what DO you do?

Well, I'm not a vegan, but my mom is very animal friendly.

She uses the rat and mice traps that don't kill them. She just catches them in those and sets them free in a field or something. She also does this when she finds spiders or other insects in the house. She just catches them herself with a piece of paper and takes them outside.

I'm not really sure how someone would handle a huge infestation of insects though.

my vegan friends tend to you organic means of pest controll that do not kill but, instead deture pests from entering the home in the first place.

I sure like my meat, but I still don't kill any 'pests'! We just moved into a new house and our bathroom has ants! I won't let my hubby put that ant stuff in there, I just kinda let em be! I know they're only seasonal and eventually they'll be gone. I found a mouse trap under our deck and just about freaked.

The easiest way for me to get rid of ants without killing them is to just make sure my floors are always swept and mopped and there are no pieces of food on the ground anywhere. I used to get ants in my kitchen, but ever since I've been more conscious of keeping crumbs off the floor, they've disappeared.

The house was vacant for 2 months and they are in the bathroom....

ewww thats gross! I wonder if something used to be in the bathroom. We've been here for about 2 weeks and I see less and less of them as the days go by.

I am a vegetarian. When it comes to pests, my husband and I just shoo them out of the house. If a moth or spider gets in, we open the doors and sweep them out with a broom.
However, we've been having a giant spider problem, and we recently sprayed around the house with bug killer because I don't want them crawling on my baby when he gets here.
I try not kill the bugs, because I know they have their purpose, but after getting a spider bite in the middle of the night, I couldn't take it anymore.

Do vegans always look down while they're walking to avoid accidentally stepping on life? How do they avoid killing those bugs that are so small they're invisible to the naked eye? As well, do they wear masks to avoid killing all the invisible, miniscule airborn life?

My friend Kari and her next door neighbor Brenda, our other friend, have decided to make a garden. Brenda is a vegan- Full on and has been for several years.
there are grubs that will ruin everything. Their landlord speaks only Deutsch and told them in Deutsch that they need to kill teh grubs. Kari has no problem w/ this, however Brenda couldn't harm a  fly.
the landlord was working out in the back of the property and saw that Brenda had found one. He watched her take her shovel and load the grub onto the shovel and walk it out to teh middle of the field. Well, these things multiply like crazy. He walked over and started 'helping' out. He found one took it to the driveway and smashed it to pieces w/ the spade of the shovel. she was horrified. I laughed inside. She was ticked. But she saved one's life...in the process, possibly killing their garden..

I love brenda, but yes, ants in the house, spiders, rats (that is what cats are for- 13 and Tortuga get the field mice and the rats- that is what cats do-she isn't going to stop them).

Or when you use bleach? I mean, bacteria is living and bleach kills them. What about when you get an infection?

LOL

I LOVE eating meat. Red meat, white meat, chicken feet, seafood, you name...I'll try it. (I even tried tripe yesterday...not so bad, considering crap used to flow through it). Anyhow... I'm very sensitive to animals. I will try to relocate things like spiders or if they are small, I just leave them be. Any sort of thing like roaches, ants, flies, or anything gross like that gets killed immediately.

Those little black ants love it inside. I've found the best thing that kills them is:http://www.renuzit.com/index.cfm?page_id=270

No joke. It kills them instantly. Not sure if my immediate drowning or the chemicals inside and it makes the room smell good. LOL

Giant meaning big or giant meaning multiple? We get these HUGE hairy spiders in our house and it drives me nuts. I have no problem killing those or Palmetto bugs/roaches. Other than that, I love all other creatures...even the little lizards...lol.   So basically, this makes me a "critter snob".

Same here, I love the lizards around here! My cats seem to destroy them, though. I don't kill the palmetto bugs. I even flip them over if they are on their backs. Spiders and roaches, however... they can burn.
