You most certainly can go backwards and it isn't that uncommon. Especially since you are not in true labor yet. Dialation wise you can open up and close back up but you will stay effaced. Some women have issues with this during labor and need csections. Also baby can move back up. My son kept trying to move back up between contractions and it took me forever to push him out lol so it happens!
