Question about "Active Labor"

posted 17th May
Okay so I was reading somewhere that when you are dialated between 1-3 that you are in the early stages of labor and can be there for weeks or months. And it said 4-8 is considered "active labor" My question is, if you are in active labor arent they supposed to admit you to the hospital? And what if you are not having any contractions? Would they try to speed it up? Like give you something to make your labor progress? I'm asking because I was dialated to a 3 at my last checkup and have had alot of contractions since then. I was just wondering if it would change anything if I was dialated to a 4 now. I have an appointment in the morning, would my doctor want to admit me if I was a four? Or just wait until something else happens?Has anyone had this happen to them? Or ever heard or it??

I read some posts on here where people are 5 cm dilated and still at home...so I think you might just haveto go when you can't stand the pain. But the best bet is to call L&D or your doctor to see what they can do for you.

I think that once you reach a 4 they will admit you into the hospital... but I'm not positive

Edit to say: it's better to wait til you can't stand the pain because when you are at home you are way more comfortable then when you are at the hospital

even though its considered "active labor" it has to be progressing in order for them to admit you.  a friend of mine was at a 5 for a week with BH contractions, but since they weren't constant contractions, they wouldn't admit her.  the only time they'll try to speed it up for you is if your water breaks and you aren't progressing on your own, or if you've labored for hours and aren't progressing.  or if you're being induced, which they wont do (if they're smart, safe doctors) until you're overdue.  it doesn't matter if you've had a lot of ctx since your last appt, it matters if they're constant and getting closer together, aka real active labor.

It really depends on the Dr, and how low the baby is, effaced ETC.. im dialated to 3 almost 4 but im still pretty thick walld so im still home and this is going to be my 7th angel.. my last kid was born in 20min once i got to the hospital and i was barely feeling my contractions.. SO the contractions im having the last 2days.. IM 1/2 TEMPTED to go to L&D.. and have em check me because WOWZAS.. are they buggin me.. but some females can handle being 4-5 cm dialated.. esp if its your 1st child.. labor can be LOOOONNG.. but if the contractions persist callyour DR and tell em.. im not comfortable being home with contactions id like to come in.. everytime they check your cervix it stirs things up and causes thining and dialation if done often enough.

Well said. I have a friend who got her doc to induce her a week early so she could go to a concert and drink. I don't think most will unless you are overdue if they are responsible.

Yeah with my first I was only in labor for 3 hours. And now I live 45 minutes away from the hospital so I just want to make sure I make it there in time! I'm fully thinned out and the baby is at a 0 station, whatever that means. My doc thought I'd have had him by now..

It's not that I want to be induced but I just don't want to be in this "uncomfortable pain". The contractions arent killing me they just suck. I just wanted to know if I went in would they make me wait it out or help speed things up. I guess every doc is different.

0 station is that your babys head is locked in the pelvis.. I bet if you walked around enough adn got those contractions going.. youll have him pretty soon.
