Code of silence

posted 17th May
So I was watching 20/20 last night and they were talking about a cop who pulled over another off duty police officer whom was driving while under the influence of alcohol, and it turned into an hr-long dispute over whether or not to arrest him. They opted to allow him to call a ride and they let him go!

I was so P.Oed!! I was asking my husband wth that was about and he said that there is a "code of silence" between officers. Unless the order to arrest comes from the Sargent or president even, they are not to arrest the officer nor are they allowed to talk about the incident.

So I ask you ladies, do you feel this right and this "code" should be understood and allowed by officers or do you think if you are an officer no matter WHO you see or catch braking the law they should be arrested or ticketed just like a civilian?

I think it makes a total mockery of the law.

A police officer should not be exempt from the laws that he/she is sworn to uphold.
I understand that occasionally a law might have to be broken while fighting a bigger crime... and I don't necessarily have a problem with that.

But... letting cops off the hook for crimes that others would end up having their lives RUINED for with a criminal record is pure, unadulterated, grade-A, BULL SHIT.

YEP! That's howfeel.

20/20 proceeded to folow off duty police officers and taped them while getting drunk at bars and what have you. Only for them to turn around and get in their cars!!

That happened to a friend of mine's husband. He was wrecker driver and when he got his DUI not only did he have to go to jail, but he was also fired. He was in his own vehicle too, not even a company car.

That part about an order from the president or a sergeant doesn't sound right. I think that they do give each other breaks sometimes. I also read about officers arresting officers too, so I don't believe there is any widespread "code of silence."

If a person does wrong, they should be punished. If they are an officer sworn to uphold the law and do something illegal, they should be punished more severely.

My hubby and I haveseen this first hand. We got pulled over along with another truck. The officer let the other truck go so my hubby asked why we were getting a ticket and not the other guy. The cop replied because he is a cop himself and we don't give other cops tickets. So we got a ticket for going 9 miles over the speed limit. And my hubby has a CDL so if he was driving under the influence he would have lost him job. Thank god he is not dumb enough to do that though.

But I did watch this show too. I think it was ridiculous. He obviously could have killed someone. Did anyone else see how that other cop beat the shit out of that lady earlier in the same show? When it was investigated the cops that went to the bar didn't even want to see the video.

I thinks that's bullshit.

If another cop can "call a ride", then why can't anyone else?
