BREASTFEEDING AND THE HEAT???

posted 16th May
My son dosen't seem to want to nurse. It was 99 degrees here today and alls we have is a whole bunch of fans. I had him in his diaper all day and he got two baths and I was wetting his hair. (were moving in, well on the 20th to a house with bulit in air conditioning but till then IT'S HOT)

He'd nurse for short peirods of time but not as much as usaully. (my boobs aren't hard so maybe he's getting enough????) lol Anyone else having this problem??? I feel bad and I don't want him to dehydrate and I know your not suppose to give them water but what if he's not nursing cause he gets even hotter?

My pump isn't workng, He never like the bottles (I've tried a few differnt ones). He hates formula. (BTW any tips on getting him to like it????)

I'm bored and hot, how's everyone day going????

Just keep trying to nurse him. Even if he's nursing for shorter periods of time (but a bit more frequent) as long as he's gaining weight it should be fine.

For formula, try a soy based, it's sweeter. Or you can mix half breastmilk, half formula in a bottle.

I tried soy, maybe I should try the normal kind???? I'm alergic to milk so everyone told me to go with soy? I think I'll try mixing them. THANKS GUYS!

I nursed all 6 of my lil angels and im doing it again this time around.. Pretty much just gotta try to get em 2 nurse as long as you can and if its short periods of time is all you get then happy with that.. just make sure hes not getting jaundice or getting lazy because of not eating well.. depending on his/her age. I allways gave my little one's just mayb 1 - 2 oz of water thro out the day but then again here in Sdakota its REALLY hot during summer months. as for getting him/her to like formula.. Persistance and patience's is a vertue on that one. you can try Nursing him then next feeding try offering him formula.. and try it more and more.. until you can get him to switch without Fighting it.. and For your comfort too.. nothing worse then getting swollen because of backd up milk.. Oucchh.. but if slowly done.. your body will respond also.. Good luck to you :p

Thanks, tommorrow it's not suppose to be as hot.

The formula thing has been driving me nutts!!! I was told to have someone else try to feed him but so far that hasn't worked. (once he starts crying they hand him right back) err... Plus I feel bad when he cry's. I guess I'll just keep trying! lol

haha.. baby wants Momma.. he knows what he wants.. I know its hard to switch 2 formula esp when you have your mind and heart set on nursing.. but just keep trying .. give yourself time and everything will work. Babies are just like us.. i wouldnt want to eat much when its that hot either. and heat makes em sleepy anyways, so cooler weather baby should return to normal eating and build up that supply for yah

as far as the formula thing goes, when your pump is working, try mixing half breastmilk an half forumla, and see f he will take it. usually thatll do the trick. also, i have heard that soothie bottles by first years. are the best nipples to use for the transition between the breast and the bottle. you guys only have a few more days til you can cool off, just hang in there, and itll be over before you know it.

i was told not to give my baby water yet, she was also born in march. supposidly, if you give them water they are burning calories because they are drinking it, and water is an empty calorie. with the heat and all, you dont want your baby loosing weight.

I found this about giving water to babies. Especially BF babies. This is why you don't need to give it to them. It was very helpful to me. Sorry but I don't have any tips on getting your baby to nurse during the heat.
