Caresoure and abortion-D&D

posted 10th Aug '12
I was just looking in my Caresource member book and saw that abortions are covered only for the following reasons: reported rape, incest, or when medically necessary to save the life of the mother.

I do get that they are government funded and shouldn't have to pay for a woman to get abortions as birth control or something but I feel like their strict restrictions on the reasoning for an abortion are not needed.

I'm in-between I don't believe any woman should have to carry an unwanted pregnancy no matter the reason, if she's on Caresource and wants an abortion I believe she should be able to get one. I don't know if they could put limits on how many abortions a woman can have that Caresource will pay for, but I feel like that would be better than telling a woman who is on Caresource that she can't get an abortion unless she has a "good" reason.

Scenario: A woman has 3 children, she receives Caresource, food-stamps, she is on income-based housing, and receives other types of help from the government. She is using birth control but her birth control fails, she doesn't have the money to get an abortion and Caresource will not pay for it because it is not within their guidelines. Should the woman have to have an unwanted baby because she can't get the money for an abortion but also can't afford to keep another child?

Logically, I think it would SAVE them money instead of cost them more. Women would be able to get abortions the right way and Caresource wouldn't be billed for prenatal care, the birth, and all the other costs that come with pregnancy and infants.

I am in the middle, what do you think should Caresource pay for abortions no matter what the reasoning? (maybe with a limit of how many you can get in a year)

I believe wholeheartedly that abortions should be covered by insurance regardless of the woman's reason for wanting an abortion.

I think that there is an agenda behind that. It certainly doesn't save them MONEY if a woman gets full prenatal care and then they have to cover another child vs if she gets an abortion.

Purely from an economical standpoint, yes they should. It's a lot cheaper to fund an abortion.

That's what DH said as well. He said they must be pro-life.
But he did say the government should have to fund an abortion though because a woman didn't use birth control and got pregnant? I'm like well that would be a whole lot cheaper than her keeping the baby and then having to get on all kinds of government assistance because she can't afford to take care of the child.

I can't imagine how many women on Caresource end up keeping babies that they wouldn't originally have kept but only kept them because they felt as if they had no other option because their insurance didn't cover it and couldn't find a way to fund an abortion. That's sad.   I don't believe any woman should be forced to keep a pregnancy she doesn't want, regardless of her reasoning.

Why should my tax money go to pay for anyones abortion? Why would I knowingly contribute to anything that will compromise my soul?

Assisting someone in getting an abortion, which includes my money paying for it, would not be a good thing for someone whose religious beliefs even preclude them from eating meat because it harmed a living creature. So, no, don't spend my money on that.

I agree.

I couldnt afford my abortion when I was pregnant with my oldest son, so THEY meaning the government had to fork out more money for the doctors appt. all for me to give him up for adoption. I dont see why its such a horrible thing.

You live in Oklahoma, correct? Oklahoma has the death penalty, which means your tax dollars probably go to fund the executions of criminals.
Or is that different?
