Percocet while Nursing

I am being perscribed oxycodone(percocet) and an antibiotic for my dental pain and infection. I have a fractured tooth that isn't getting pulled until Tuesday. Has anyone ever taken percocet while nursing? Did it affect your baby at all? I was taking them right before I had my root canal a couple months ago and was told they were safe. I just want some more reassurance before I start taking them again for the next couple of days.

That's what they prescribed my sister after her C-Section, and she was nursing.

It shouldn't hurt the baby. My doc atcually prescribed me vicodin while pregnant...

That's what I was prescribed for my c-section pain and it didn't affect my nursing at all... I don't nurse right now but that's for a completely different reason.

I read that I should watch the baby for sedation. I didn't see any signs of drowsiness or anything the last time I took it. I'm just very paranoid about what I take.

Well, I am not going to take the percocet. I have been taking ibuprofen 600 and seem comfortable so I'm going to stick with this. If it becomes extreme I'm sure I can get the dentist to call something in. Thank you girls for your input.

Hey, I am glad you are not taking the percocet.  I took perc. after my c section for pain, and when we brought Adison to the ER when she was 4 days old, they gave her narcan, bc they thought she was essentially overdosing due to my percocet.  The narcan didn't do anything, and it wasnt' the percocet that caused her symptoms, however it really opened my eyes up to making myself more aware.  I had asked the dr at the hospital that prescribed the perc if it was safe for nursing, and he said yes.  When Adison was in the ICU I saw lactation consultants a couple times, and they looked into perc. and nursing and apparently there were studies done in the past 3 months (well this was almost 4 months ago, so past 7 months from now) that indicate that there can be many negative effects passed on to the nursing infant if mom takes percocet.  Anyway, I am not trying to scare you, just be sure what you are getting into before you take the percocet again!  At least you know to watch for drowsiness.  If you have to take percocet and you are really worried abotu breastfeeding, then feed him pumped milk or formula while you are on the painkillers and pump&dump your milk.
