Infant allergies

posted 10th Aug '12
So I think Alice has allergies, her nose is constantly runny but the snot is clear. Is there anything I can do for her to make this better besides saline and sucking the snot? I use baby vaporub on her as well. Maybe something homeopathic that won't harm her? I feel like she already gets too much tylenol/ibuprofen with teething, and I don't want to pump more smurf into her if I don't have to. I don't even think they make anything for babies her age for allergies anyway.

She's 8 months old [ well she will be Sunday ]

*Edited - addition

So I looked up homeopathic remedies for allergies for infants. And I'm basically doing everything they suggest already, except for one thing. The writer of the article said she puts a few blankets under one end of the mattress to prop it.

We proped up DDs mattress when she had a cold bc of all the snot and it worked wonders. I folded up a towel instead of a blanket bc I didn't want it to be up to much because she turns a lot in her sleep

See I never thought of putting it under the mattress until I read that article! I was just like "Eh I don't want to prop her on blankets, blah blah blah" but this will work well. She has some small blankets though that will work perfect.

nothing med wise for the under 2. I did give my daughter hylands allergie I just gave her 1/4 a teaspoon. it really helped. it also is not recommended for under 2. so it's your call. It did help. I did let my pedi know I gave it to her.
other than the snot sucker, saline ( if she's stuffy) and propping her mattress up, oh and vics when she's stuffy there is not much else you can do.

I hope so! I'm not disgusted by the boogies, but when they run so much she licks them and then she gets that chapped thing and I don't want it to get bad and hurt her. That whole chapped thing is uncomfortable.

Yeah, I decided not to buy and give her anything. I read that they took the infant stuff off the shelves because it could cause infant deaths.

yep. that's why I went with the all natural stuff. but you still have to watch it.
some dr's recommend benadryl. even for under 2. But I wouldn't give it with out the pedi;s ok. and only once a day. my daughter is 15 months and takes it at night for her eczema.

No benedryl. That just dries smurf up and can make it worse in the long run. I'd rather this run its course in case it isn't allergies, you know? I just am kind of assuming since she's had it and it came back. And the boobies are clear.

yeah.
my nephew has taken benadryl every 4 hours since he was 4 months old he is now 6. and now that kid is ALWAYS sick. the only reason I give it to my daughter is because her eczema. I refuse to give it more than once a day. but I know how much that stuff hurts and itches.

I have eczema. If you keep up on a good lotion like Lubriderm, it will go away, my doctor said the itch causes the rash, not the other way around like other rashes causing itching. Once the itching stops the rash will go away. You can also get oatmeal baths and prescribed cream for it, but it's usually a steroid.

I put eucerin ( in the tub) on her, and once a day her r/x. derm and pedi said also benadryl at bed time for a month past clear, same with the cream. But I can't get it to clear up. it's on her thighs the most. but I can see faint patches on her arms and chest. driving me nuts. we use cetaphil and the only soap I found for laundry that won't break either of out is mixing washing soda and borax. evne the free and and clear stuff bother's my skin.
sucks when things happen to our kids!!

I swear eczema is worst in kids. I find a lot of friends who have kids that have it, have a lot of trouble getting it to go away. Of course it never really goes away, it's always 'there' and will come back whenever, but it's frustrating. I didn't start getting it until I was older, teenager. It's frustrating, I get it on my boobs, stomach, backs of my knees, inner elbows and lately on my legs.. ARGH.

But children don't really know how to take care of themselves so it's harder.

Idk how old your LO is but do you give her eggs or has she had the flu shot? My little brother had horrible eczema that my mom couldn't clear up at all. They realized he had an egg allergy and has soon as they cut out eggs (and stopped the flu vax bc of egg protein) it cleared right up.
