Speech/ot/physical therapy for toddlers

posted 9th Aug '12
I have a question for parents of kids in speech occupational or physical therapy. Is it standard for them to do the therapy with your child alone and not allow you back there? My child is almost 3 years old and is in therapy for autism. I feel he is way too young to be asked to do this alone and they do not give me progress reports or anything all they say is he did good they never hardly tell me anything else unless i push them too with questions. I also am just not comfortable with not being able to go back there. He is just too young and how can i help my child if i can't watch what they do and how do i know how he is doing. I think they could atleast give progress reports to me so i know. Just trying to find out if this is standard or if there is somewhere i can go that will let me back there. i like my sons therapists but i just agree with the way they do things at all and today almost flipped out on one of them because he was upset and wanted me to come and i walked back with him and wanted to stay and she said to me that she thought i should leave now because she didnt want him thinking he can cry and get me back there all the time because he needed to do it himself. Made me so mad i just walked off and cooled down to keep from chewing her out.

That doesn't sound right to me.

My son sees all three. His speech is more often than the rest of the therapies. But I'm in the room at each session and visit. And I always get mail a progress report afterwards and they always tell me how he is going and what needs to be improved etc etc..

I would seek out a new place to go.

Okay. I was not sure if this was just how it was and i was overreacting or not. This is the only place that does therapy in the city i live. I have heard there is a city about an hour away that is pretty good so i am thinking that the drive is worth it. I'm going to talk to my pedi about it and see about a referral.

That doesn't seem right to me. DS is almost 3 and has both PT an OT, and I go back with him for both. I don't get progress reports, but I don't need them because I discuss everything with the therapist during the session.

My oldest is in ST and they have no problem letting us back in her sessions. They actually encourage it so that we know how to help her and what she needs to work on. I would have them explain why you are not allowed back there with him and if they can't give you a reason I would look for a better place.

I work in OT and we do see children as young at 2 without their parents however we ALWAYS provide progress reports and have face to face time with parents following appointments. If you feel uncomfortable I would speak directly with the therapist, I'm sure they will work with you!

They told me the kids act better when parents are not back there and the therapy is more effective. He is also in early intervention and they come to the house and we are there the whole time and they give is progress reports and it is great and he does just fine with us there so i don't see how that is true. I have "pushed" myself back into the sessions before and then they put in his last evaluation that i attended on occassion but he does better when i am not present and i do not see how when he does fine in early intervention and does not act out when i am there either.

My daughter was never seen alone, unless we requested. Our neighbor was the EDIS worker and would come over. She would do the therapy with our daughter while I did laundry or other chores. She never banned me from watching.

The most face to face time i get is he did fine in the waiting room before they walk away. I have tried telling the therapists i want to be back there and they insist i should not because he needs to do it alone.

I would speak to their supervisor, they should give you more input on the sessions and at the very least acknowledge your concerns!

With my kids they were alone in the room with the therapists. That was because when I am around, the kids don't focus as much. It's too distracting. I however stayed in a room where there was a 1 way mirror and a speaker. So I observed/heard the entire session. The kids just saw a mirror. If it makes you uncomfortable, I would approach it with the supervisor.

Therapy can be beneficial if the child is alone and 100% focused with his/her therapist but the clinic should make it accessible for you to observe and it is always your right to say no...I'm going as well. They can't deny you that.

Also I never had a feed back at every session. Some days are off days, some days are good days. I got a full report after a few weeks on progress but not every appointment.
