Giving older kids a gift from baby when he's born...

posted 9th Aug '12
How many of you did this? I've heard of this a lot, getting the older child a gift "from" the new baby to help ease into the idea of a sibling. If you did it, how old was the older child ad what did you get them?

My daughter was almost 22 months old when her brother was born. We gave her a doll (her very own baby to take care of). We didn't say it was from the baby though.

I think that is a great idea. Especially for children that are having a hard time with it.

With this last baby we got each sibling a gift for being an awesome big brother/sister. Our son is 9 and we got him a wooden pocket knife kit. DD is 3 and we got her a little stuffed animal that makes noises. They both LOVED them.

My daughter is not jealous... YET ;)... but she turns four within a week and a half of my due date so we aren't having a normal big family birthday party like usual. Just cake at home with my parents. I just don't want her to feel less important because of the new baby so I thought a gift the day he is born might help her feel less "lost in the shuffle," so to speak.

That's what we did for my SD.. didnt say it was from the baby either..

Were TTC now, my son will be atleast 3.5. Were thinking about getting gim a turtle when the baby comes so he will have something to take care of as well

My mom gave her older three presents when our youngest brother was born. It was just a bag of neat dollar store stuff and disposable cameras. It distracted us when she was busy with a newborn

This baby is due right after Christmas, so I'll probably just not open all of her Christmas presents

Totally not my style. We've just gone with the notion that adding to our family is the most natural thing in the world and our older kids have always done well with accepting that, no distractions or bribes needed. I think sometimes parents overcompensate and introduce anxiety where there may be none trying to avoid bad feelings or rivalry.

DS was 2 years 10 months when DD was born and we got him a book with "cars" movie stories. He loved it and was so happy that his sister "got" it for him.

How is it a bribe????

Family and friends give the baby gifts when the baby arrives. Whats the difference? My kids hand picked out a gift to the baby each for her birth so (baby) gave a gift from her to them as well. Being 4 and 10 they obviously know it was me who got them it, but its the thought that counts.

Just like their Grandparents buy them a gift as well as baby cause they believe its rude to only give to one kid.
To each their own but saying its a bribe does not make sense in anyway.

I bought a stuff animal (nala from lion king) and i bought the same size stuffed animal simba. She was so excited to give her brother the simba when she came to visit and surrrrrrrrrrrre enough there was nala waiting for her   haha she thought it was great and tells everyone still (9 months later) that her baby brother got that for her. It kinda broke the ice when she came in and was so excited (she was about to turn three their birthdays are 9 days apart) not sure if it would work for younger kids.
