My son's first plane ride - please help!

posted 16th May
So I've been told that you're not supposed to give a child under the age of two anything, even while he's flying.....I know the pressure is very rough on them and I'm afriad he will be in pain. Is there anything I can do? I can't just feed him the entire time because he can't eat for two hours straight....but what did you ladies do? Our plane doesn't leave for over 8 hours (although I have to leave in 5 1/2 hours) so please let me know what you think I should do. Oh, and my son is 14 weeks, 1 day old.

Thanks, ladies!

The main points it's a problem is asscending and descending. We did a bottle up, and down. Maybe not a full bottle so he'd still be hungry as your landing too. We did formula up, and a little bit of juice, which was new to my daughter, for landing. Since it was new and tasty, she sucked it down with no problem. If he will take a paci try that too while you're in the air. All the sucking and swallowing helps a lot!

I was askingmy doctor about that.. because i am from Ohio and i am living in florida now.. and all of my family is back in ohio.. So of course i want to take my son back home to visit and they said they are able to fly after they get there 2 weeks shots but as far as giving them something..you are right you cant. But for the pressure its mainly when you are taking off and getting up in the air... and also when you are coming down. So i would feed him as you are going up and then let him nap maybe and then when they tell you that its almost landing time give him a bottle..because they say sucking on something will help.

How old is your son??

Hope this helps

I will definitely take a pacifier (I call it a "binky")....but I have pedialyte - I'm not sure I can take that on a plane, though, being it's a liquid, even though it's not even opened yet. All these rules suck!

I have this plastic container that you can store powder in - if I put that container in a plastic bag, will I be able to take it on? I have to feed our son and will be furious if they tell me I can't....I will buy bottled water after we pass security.

he should just be getting formula at his age

I did the little individual sealed bottles of Gerber Applejuice. It was easy up in the air to open, and since it was sealed they didn't care. I just watered it down so it wasn't so sweet. I think we brought the same little container with formula, and had it together with other baby items so in MN there was no problem with security. In PA, when we were coming back, the security guy made me mix a little bit together and taste it myself to prove to him that it was formula. I was PISSED because my daughter was on Neocate, which is $135 for 4 little cans, so wasting any of it made me mad.

i just meant because someone else on here mentioned something about juice and I was just asking ifI could give him that at a young age because he might feel better on the plane if he has something that might taste better. I formula-feed him and don't give him anything else.

Yeah, I have those "ready-made" formula containers and they're closed so I'm wondering if I can take those instead.

And, our doctor said just for the plane rides watered down juice would be fine. Formula up and watered down juice for landing. My daughter was close to your sons age.

well as far as taking the babies drinks on the plane.. they told me it was ok..to bring it now.. I am not sure if there is a limit to how much you can have... you might want to check when you get there!

Shouldn't be a problem, usually they are okay. We've had some security people who are very strict, and others who just helped me get through security quickly and helped me put everything back away. Just make sure you claim all of the formula you have with you, and juice or pedialyte.
