Finding out the gender is illegal

posted 8th Aug '12
It is illegal for physicians to determine the sex of a fetus in India.

India has a long history of preferring sons to daughters. The distribution of women versus men in society is heavily weighted towards males, even with the efforts of lawmakers to even out this distribution. It is really interesting that among higher classes this preference towards males tends to be more pronounced than in lower classes.
Because of this unequal distribution, lawmakers have made it illegal for India physicians to figure out the sex of fetuses in their mother’s womb. The hope is that without parents knowing the sex of their child, they’ll be less likely to abort a girl and carry it full term, helping to even out the population.
However, many physicians continue to offer services to tell the gender of an unborn child, despite the risks. For many doctors, the payout for offering to find the gender of a fetus is greater than the risk of being caught and punished by the government.
The actual extent of this law breaking is more or less unknown, but it’s thought to be very common. The business of finding genders and aborting females is thought to be worth more than $100 million in India.

OMG, that's horrible. I know it happens a lot, but still. There are people over here who just want to get pregnant but can't.

I'm sorry but what does this have to do with anything?

There are people there that want to get pregnant but can't as well, just like there are people here that would abort depending on the sex of the baby.

I guess I didn't make myself clear enough. The article states that there are women who are aborting girl babies because they want boys. They take for granted the fact that they can get pregnant. It's like a slap in the face for women who would love to have a little baby, boy or girl.

I find it sad, however their culture is quite different from mine.

I wont get into what other countries should or should not do, its not my business.

I find it more interesting that it is illegal to find out. Personally, I think it's pretty good problem solving on India's part.

Its probably also condsidered a slap in the face to make things like this all about you
Someone else keeping a pregnancy has no bearing on people with conception issues.

That's bizarre. It kind of sucks though because that means that a lot of unwanted (and possibly unloved) daughters are being born there which is sad. I mean its also sad to abort a baby just because its a daughter (especially by the time its big enough to tell the sex)..

But one thing I love about finding out the gender is that I have a chance to deal with any gender disappointment before hand. Like I really wanted a girl.. but of course, I would have loved a boy too.. I just would have been initially disappointed that it wasn't a girl..

I'd get over that by the end of the day, lol, and I'd be happily looking forward to a son, but I like the fact that I have that opportunity to find out so that the birth isn't tainted by a touch of disappointment.

Apparently it doesn't really work that way over there and people just abort the girls. That's really sad.

Sorry, not making this about me. Not TTC at the moment, but maybe I'm just confused or what not. I'm addressing the fact that women over there would abort just because it's a girl.

Actually I know exactly what you're saying and it's the same old played out statement of "she is so selfish to abort that baby because tons of women can't have a baby of their own" but in this case you're focusing on gender. Personally this mindset is extremely irritating and I am one of the people you speak of. I don't get pregnant easily and it takes me longer than normal to finally become pregnant yet I am not sitting here SMH at the fact that a country does things differently than we do. Or the fact that women abort, period. Cultural reasons or not.

So do some women over here though. It's just more common over there.
