laptop vs Desktop
posted 8th Aug '12
Im going to be buying a new computer. I prefer desktops since im more familer with them but i keep getting told that i should buy a laptop instead. For whichever you have, how long has it lasted you? My desktop has last 6 years.

I have a desktop but its on the verge of being trash lol. I dont really have a need to take a computer with me when i go places. I work at a nursing home so anything i need to do on a computer can wait til i get home.

then i suggest a desktop but if you have some spare money later on a laptop always comes in useful for kids road trips and so on

With laptops, it really depends on the brand and what you plan to do with it.
If you spend the money, then a laptop can be worth it.
I currently have a HP, and it has lasted me almost 4 years but I wouldn't recommend them as a brand.
If you treat a laptop right... IE... you dont always have it sitting on your lap and you have proper anti virus, then I believe they can be just as good.
I would recommend Toshiba and Dell as I have used them both at wor_ and found them the most reliable.
Preferably Toshiba.
I wouldn't have Desktop now as atlhough they are cheaper, they use up too much room and I can't really lay in bed or on the couch with one which is what I use it for.
A lot of professionals use laptops as Desktops everyday. I have 2 screens at work and a docking station so its just like a PC.

Theres pros and cons for both. Desktops can be upgraded in most cases, laptops not so much. Desktops are cheaper. They're cheaper to fix.
Laptops are great for mobility, but they overheat easily. They're expensive to fix, and expensive to replace.
I've been through 3 laptops in 4 years. One HP, I blew all the hard drives, then the graphics card. One Dell, I electrified the motherboard. I'm currently using Dell alienware. I've been through 5 chargers on all 3. BUT I'm a graphics heavy gamer.
I'm also the kind of person who walks into a room and the lightbulb blows out.. I repel technology, lol.

The guy at RadioShack told us that laptops are useless unless you're willing to drop the $$$ on a good one.
I prefer my iMac for sure, I'll never own a laptop again unless it's a MacBook....I'd still rather have my iMac though. AND they are very easy to move.

Mostly what ill use my computer for is the internet, storing pics and music, and playing around with making graphics and animations. Id LOVE to have a mac but theyre kind of out of my price range. I think ill probably stick with a desktop considering you all said laptops arent good unless u spend some good money on them lol. And theyre more expensive to replace parts and upgrade. Ive used Dell and HP and i like both. Never used a toshiba but ill look into it.
Thanks for everyones input

If I ever get a computer again, I think I'm going back to desktop.
My current computer that I've had for 4 years is a laptop, and it's so smurfing fabulous to be able to carry it around with me.... but man, I miss my desktop.

It really does depend on how much your willing to spend.
I have a good dell that gets used with a docking station most of the time at k and it wasn't that expensive.
Your price range is reallllly important. As well as your uses.
With what your saying.. it could really go either way.. but I hate designing on my laptop screen I need other monitors.

Thats one thing i was worried about too, the difficulty of designing. I have the motorola atrix phone so my internet it pretty sweet on it. And i have a kindle fire. Since i work in town its easy to tap into mcdonalds wifi so i dont really need a laptop unless i knew for sure it was better than a desktop. Im looking to spend less than $800 so that rules out a good laptop lol.

You'd actually be surprised with a laptop.
Obviously with what your wanting it for the most important things are..
Operating system/speed & Memory so it goes as fast as you need it to go.
I honestly would not rule out a laptop with an $800 limit.
I'm sure you've probably used it, but have a loo at cnet. They have lots of good reviews on products.

I HATE laptops! I love my PC. I might just hate them because I trusted my 2 year old to watch a movie on my month old laptop at bedtime and she ripped the keys off. heheh. Lesson learned

Build your own desktop. It's really not hard, you pick exactly what you want, and it is much cheaper. I will never not build a computer again. Plus, you can tell the blowhards at Apple and Microsoft to kiss your tush and make a seamless move to Linux. I haven't paid for an Os in years and love Linux, even being a gamer.

I would consider doing that but im not knowledgeable enough with computers to do that. Lol. When i think of "building" my own i think of clicking the option to install a dvd drive or not LMAO
