IVF. Using a sperm donor.

posted 8th Aug '12
My husband and I are doing IVF in a few months and we have been talking about using a sperm donor. The main reason being my husband has schizophrenia and so do his brothers. We were thinking we don't want to possibly pass on the gene and have our child have issues when they are older.
Well my husband wants us to not use a donor that looks like him. Is it silly that I want to? He was teased all through school for having red hair as was I but I still want our child to look as much like us as possible. Also with me having red/auburn hair there is still a chance genetically they will get red hair.
What would you do in this situation? Would you use a donor that looks as much like him as possible or go the complete opposite?

I love red hair. Red isn't a very dominant gene for your child to have it I think both parties need to carry it. I personally would choose someone who looked like him.

I don't know about the red hair thing ...my friend has brown hair and so does his egg donor and somehow he has a red headed baby. (And yes she's his)

If he said he didn't want someone that looked like him then I'd tell him to forget it.

I think thats great. He wants the best his his kid. Being teased growing up, I know the pain of that all to well. I would talk about going with a brunette version of DH for a donor if you could. That way the baby would still look like you two.

Meet somewhere in the middle. His features but let him choose the hair color. I am a red head my dad is too, my brother is too and hates it! My sister is the only one that got my moms brown hair. I would do what makes both of you happy! Good luck!!!

Thanks everyone.
Its just really strange to think of having a child that wouldn't look like my husband. I know either way he will love the child because if this fails we will be fostering to adopt which is something either way we want to everntually do.
