leaking colostrum..

posted 7th Aug '12
a lot of it! i'm 39 weeks so i'm sure it's normal, just so strange to me because this is my first baby. i will literally leak puddles onto my shirt when i'm laying around the house. when i'm out it's not as noticable because of padded bras (i just purchased nursing pads, too.) just crazy because my sister had a baby in january and said she didn't leak at all! i hope this means i have super boobs. LOL.

mine started around 6 months but i have progressively leaked more and more... i used to enjoy having bra free time, but i suppose that's not an option while nursing.

You think a puddle is bad... You should have seen my boob two or three weeks ago. I developed a "Milk fissure" because my right boob was under so much pressure. I literally started leaking out the side of my boob about 1 1/2 to 2 inches AWAY from my nipple. I filled an overnight Kotex pad it was leaking so bad. I tried using a nursing pad but those filled up in less than 30 minutes. My OB freaked out and made me go see a Breast Surgeon who did an ultrasound. The surgeon showed me where my milk duct was and the fissure that was extending from my milk duct to the outside of my boob. The fluid was just pouring out of me. So gross. Luckily, the pressure reduced and my body was able to form a blister over the fissure. However, I have to watch to make sure the swelling doesnt get too bad or else the fissure will open up again.

Yeah, basically my boob is a volcano...bahahha. If my right boob doesnt produce enough milk, I'm going to feel pretty jipped after dealing with that...

The surgeon said it was really rare. The odd thing was that it was not painful what so ever. It looked like a water-filled blister and I kept playing with it till it popped. Then it started leaking out, then pouring out. We got scared at how fast it was filling up the pads so we called my OB. I had to see the surgeon the next morning. Hopefully, it will heal up on its own after the baby is born or else I would have to have surgery to close up the fissure. Its looking good though since it formed another blister already.

Super crazy though. I get a kick out of calling my right boob "Mount Vesuvius". hehe.

i actually got colostrum at 12 weeks. If you are leaking now just wait til you actually start breastfeeding. Some women are just leaky. If you start soaking through the breast pads (cause they really don't hold a lot) I suggest getting maxi pads and cutting them in half. I had to do that for a few weeks when I had my daughter. I may have to do that again with this one
