I want to breastfeed my baby

posted 16th May
How long will I breastfeed this time?

Now, I know that I want to breast feed my baby. But like a lot of mothers, my body just doesn’t produce enough milk.

With my first child, I was able to breast feed for only 2 weeks. So I tried to give him formula, but he couldn’t it keep down. At the time we were living with my husbands family and my mother-in-law suggested that I give him fresh cows milk. They had a cow that they milked twice a day, so there was plenty of milk to go around. So for the next 2 months of his life I gave him fresh milk.

I then made the mistake of telling his pediatrician. He freaked out, telling me that cows milk doesn’t have enough vitamins and nutrients to support his growth and development. Even though Simon was in the 100th percentile in his weight and 110th percentile in his height. Apparently the pediatrician didn’t pay attention to that. So he told me to give him formula. I did. Regretting it for next 2 weeks that he drank it. He could not keep it down, kept vomiting and was always hungry and crying.

He lost weight right before my eyes. So I gave him the cows milk again, but by then his tummy had been messed up from switching from breast milk to formula to cows milk to formula and back to cows milk. Even though it was a lot less, he still vomited for the next week, until his tummy got better.

When we went to see his pediatrician for his well child appointment a few weeks later, Simon was back to his normal weight. The pediatrician asked me if I gave him formula. I didn’t want to, so I didn’t and he didn’t need to know about it. So I told him yes. And guess what the he said…. “See? The formula is much better for him, he is doing much better.” I was pretty ticked, considering he was the same as he was last time. Healthy and growing. So I never went back there again.

With my second child I was able to breastfeed for 4 months, and during those 4 months I had enough that I was able to pump extra and freeze it. So technically Stanley was breastfed for 5 months. I had decided to not even try giving him formula.

I had found out that goats milk is a lot easier on an infants tummy than cows milk. And at this point we were no longer living with the in-laws, and they had gotten rid of their milking cow. So what did I do? I bought goats milk from the grocery store. And this time when I went to the pediatrician, a different one, I decided to tell her the truth and stand my ground if she told me it wasn’t good enough.

By this time we had gotten a goat from a friend and I milked her twice a day, driving back and forth to my mother-law’s house. Because we couldn’t keep the goat in our subdivision, obviously. But a mother would do anything to keep her baby healthy and fed. Fresh milk is always better than store bought.

To my surprise, the pediatrician was thrilled! She told me that the goats milk was a lot better than formula on a baby’s tummy, even though supposedly it doesn’t have enough nutrients. But she wasn’t concerned because Stanley was, just like his older brother, in his 100th percentile in his weight and 110th percentile in his height. He was healthy and growing. She said that a mother knows what is best for her children. And I loved her for that. And that made it very difficult to leave her when we moved.

Now pregnant with my third child, I am worried that I might not be able to breastfeed for as long as I want. With Simon my body produced milk for 2 weeks, and with Stanley for 4 months. I pray that the increase continues and that I am able to breastfeed this baby for at least 6 months.

wow very interesting story!
nvr heard of anyone doing that before, but if it worked for you and your baby then nothing wrong w/ that as long as they were healthy.
however, i thought it could be kind of risky feeding them milk directly from the animal since it wasnt pasteurised? (sp)

anyway, good luck with the new baby. i would try BF and if it doesnt work out, there are MANY diff types of formulas you could try. All babies are different

I boiled the milk and cooled it before giving it to them, so I think it was pasturized enough.

But what is "BF"?
