Risperdal

posted 7th Aug '12
My sons pedi has prescribed this for him to help with his sleeping and aggression.

I'm just wanting some feedback, wondering if anyone has put their child on it. It the pharmacy gets it in tomorrow we will be starting it then. It had to be ordered.

Its an antipsychotic....a heavy duty one. It made a zombie out of me....suicidal thoughts and acts. I hope this is a last resort because that isnt smurf you play with. What is the dosage?

Agree. I typically see this prescribed to adults these days, not children.

woah. thats dangerous at too high doses. at a high dose it could actually make your son not be able to sleep at all. and he may have akathesia. how is he now?
have you asked maybe about melatonin? does your son only need it for sleep?

Yes, hes been in treatment for over a year for autism. He has a specialist and a regular pedi that hes been seeing since he was 3

I was 14 when they put me on it...for similar reasons to ops son...it only made things worse.

My old neighbor had her kid taken by the state because of his aggressive behaviors. They put him in an in patient facility and this was one of he first things they prescribed...he was home on a weekend visit once and stayed the night...she gave me his meds and i got to looking at them and saw that, and it was only 5 mg less than i jad been on as a much larger teenager!

Op, its up to you but please do the research. This is a drug designed to treat schizophrenia, initially. Just think about that. I was subjected to a large amount of psychotropic drugs...the worst of them being risperdal and depakote. I was subjected to far higher than average doses because they didnt have the effects desired. There can be a lot of reasons for aggression....environment, temperament, mental disorder, abuse....etc. have you at least attempted non-medicinal treatment?

Yes we have, this is a last resort and we're worried about the state coming in. Risperdal is one of the only medications labeled to treat autistic patients, the others are off label for things like blood pressure. Risperdal was the safest in comparison to the other offered.

Two of my son's were on Risperdal in lower doses. The only side effect I had noticed with either child is a huge appetite. I heard it was the only drug FDA approved for children with Autism so far. (although I could be wrong) You do have to be careful with these meds, I deff agree with that. If he is having issues with sleep Clonidine is great for sleep. I have my Autistic son on it. It is the only thing that will work for him. And yes, it is for blood pressure in larger doses but in small doses it does great for sleep.
