Non-verbal children.

posted 7th Aug '12
I know nothing about non-verbal children but I jusy read an ad where a family is looking for a puppy for their son who is non-verbal. Is having a puppy something that would greatly benifit a non-verbal child? I know on this website alot of scam artists post things like this. If these people are real, I think I'd like to give them a puppy free of charge.

I know our local library does a weekly thing where kids can read to dogs.
They are certified service dogs though
its supposed to open them up and make them at ease

it might.. dogs are great for therapy!
its not going to help the child talk persay
but depending on his condition can help become more comfortable or feel comfortable
if this was legit
i would give them one

That's really nice of you. Maybe try to contact the family? What kind of dogs do you breed?

it might. You could call a speech therapist and see what they think about dogs and non talking kids.

on a personal note, my son talks away to our dogs when they are in his room with him.

I plan to get in touch with these people later on today. I was just curious if animals help non-verbal children in some way or if the parents just want their child to have a pet.

The puppies I have are rottweiler/boxer/pit mix.

Dogs are awesome therapy for a lot of things if trained right. One of my son's goes to pet therapy. I personally don't get it but he is in residential care. Has many issues.

Are you sure they aren't looking for a service dog for their non-verbal child. We are currently trying to locate someone who sells and trains an ASD service dog, and they are somewhere around $30 000 dollars.I'd ask questions before you give them a puppy because in the service dog program they have to literally pick the breed and select one from a premium litter-I would hate for you to misdirect your kindness, as it is very thoughtful of you.
My son is non-verbal and a service dog would prevent my son from running into the road, and help him have more social interaction when someone stops to talk about the guide dog, etc.

Actually I called the number they had on the ad and got to talk to someone from an "agency". They basically said that the child just needed a puppy, any puppy. I asked for proof that they worked at an angency and was faxed a poorly made paper. They turned out to be fake, the agency doesn't exist. I even called back to let them know I knew they were fake and they tried to tell me that it's just hard to find and that I was getting some child hopes up and crushing them.

a professional agency wouldnt say something like that. And it doesnt cost that much for them to just go adopt a puppy. If they dont have money for adoption then they dont have money to feed it or take care of it either. I wouldnt give them one.

My child is non verbal and non mobile. She really connects to pets and brightens up. But to say it would " help her" IDK How far that really goes.

If that is a scam, how messed up to use special needs child hoax to lure people in.
