Food advice

Has anyone ever substituted granulated sugar for powdered sugar? I am making DH a birthday cake and frosting calls for 2-1/2 cups powdered sugar. I read online that I can use granulated sugar and add 1 tsp cornstarch per cup of sugar and blend it together until it becomes consistency of powdered sugar. Just wanted to see if anyone ever tried it? TIA

powdered sugar will be better and its cheap. you should just use that. I think it would taste funny with the regular sugar

do you have equal or sweet and low? those work like powdered sugars.

or try this

* 1 egg white
* 3/4 cup milk
* 1 cup white sugar
* 1 cup butter, softened
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1. Heat milk to boiling, and then let cool. In a large bowl, beat egg white until stiff. Add sugar, butter, and vanilla. Mix with mixer till well blended. Add cooled milk, then beat until nice and creamy. Will take about 15 to 20 minutes of beating after adding the milk. Use to frost any kind of cake. Best if kept refrigerated after frosting cake.

i guess youll have to try it then. It will be different for sure. let us know how it turns out. I tried it once though and it was awful. I didnt use starch though.

do you have jello? maybe try putting jello on top or home made whipped cream. You might be able to do a whipped cream icing. Try searching for recipes for different types of cake toppings. And thanks for this thread, i just came up with an experiment.
