Pick whomever you want. It doesn't have to be a blood relative

pick who ever YOU choose, my son has a godfather which is one of my husbands best friends. It doesn't matter whether they are blood related or not, it matter on whether you can trust them enough to take on the responsibility if something were to happen

The traditional role of Godparents are to be a resource for the child's spiritual growth. That being said non-religious people choose Godparents to fulfill the role of being a non-partial advocate for the child in the case something happens to the parents and is usually now a non-relative. If the parents are in an accident then the Godparents would make sure the child is being cared for by a responsible family member both physically and financially.
My kids Godparents are not related, share our faith and beliefs, and each are in our wills that they are the financial benefactors for our kids. If anything happens to us they make sure whoever is taking care of our kids gets their checks every month and makes sure our boys are being cared for properly.
Hope this help you make a decision.

Pick whoever you want. A Godmother would get custody/gaurdianship/benefits type resonsibilities if something were to happen to both parents.

God parents are whoever you choose. When I have my babies my kids God parents aren't family.

My mom picked blood (my dads sister) ..
Now she doesn't talk to any of us, she is the godmother
Of me and both of my brothers, family can be out of the picture just as quickly as non family.

My DD has two sets of God parents. One set shares our faith, the others are my SIL and her bf.

Pick whoever you want. My godmother is MIA. I haven't seen her in 15+ years.
I chose my one and only best friend, we've been friends since 2nd grade so, almost 16 years we've been friends. She's basically like a sister. She loves my son like no other and have no doubt in my mind, if something was to happen to DH & I, she'd make sure he was cared for to the best of her ability.

For us, there are prerequisites to be a God parent. They have to be a full blown Catholic. Have to have already received first communion and be confirmed. Also be a faithful Catholic meaning attends Mass every week. All for religion purposes only. If you aren't looking for a God parent for religious purposes there isn't a reason in having one.

Not necessarily, that's more outdated.. I have my sister in laws as godparents of each of my kids but our will states that if we pass they all go to my mom or of she can't do it my one sister in law who I think would be best to raise them, I wouldn't want them all split.

Then what is the purpose of having a God parent?

It is someone to help in the upbringing and faith of the child, someone you respect morally and would like to help guide your child in life and religion. Being that it's just a religious ceremony, it has no bearing on custody.
