baby girls vagina doesn't have an opening?

posted 6th Aug '12
I was changing my 8month old's nappy this morning and I noticed her vagina doesn't have an opening. Or rather it does but it seems to be sealed shut. I can't believe I didn't notice this before now.. I feel like a crap mum already so please don't give me smurf. I can see where the opening should be, there's a little clear line running down where the hole should be. It looks a bit like a healed scar. I'm assuming it must have been this way since she was born, but IDK. Does anyone know what this is? She has a pedi appt on friday, but I can't wait that long. I'm going to google but thought I'd ask here too.

Has anyone's daughter gone through anything similar?

this may be a post & run, I have company arriving soon, so TIA

All little girls have one. It's her hymen.

She could have fused labia

I would take her to the docs and see what is up

I know a girl whose daughter had the same thing happen. They ended up doing surgery to fix it.

It gets broken when you lose your virginity. Totally normal.

What if I my DD never looked like that? Is it possible to not have a hymen or one that isn't as obvious?

All girls have a hymen. If you didn't see it, you either didn't look hard enough or didn't know what to look for. It's a membrane that covers the opening of the vagina - exactly what OP described.

Really? I didn't realize it could be outside, I thought that was inside the vagina. My first daughter had an opening... maybe everyone's just different?
Thank you that's semi reassuring

Outside how? It covers the opening of the vagina.

It is probably just that you never noticed.

Yep. All vagina's are different. My daughter's isn't very visible anymore. It was very noticeable when she was a newborn though.

with my first girls i noticed that in the middle of the hole there was still attached skin so it looked like to vagina holes one on top of the other when i mentioned it to the doctor it already separated by itself and i beat myself up over it thinking how could i have not noticed it sooner but they was nothing wrong with her then and now but you are saying its closed all the way i would take her in as soon as you can

I dont think its a hymen if it looks like her cooter is compleatly closed up with NO hole what so ever.. Cuz my LO has a hole.. but i can also see her hymen if i loook for it.. OP, i would still bring it up to your pedi.

Sounds like a fused labia. The doctor can give you a cream for it and it will go back to normal.
