Most pay servers a much lower minimum wage, except California. I don't know about any other states though.

In my area it's like 2 something plus tips. I don't know how they get away with putting it so much less than min wage but they do, I guess because they get tips on top of it.

wait staff get paid about $3 an hour and then get tips. their paychecks are pretty much nothing and live on tips.

Quoting Melissa~:" Obviously it's common courtesy to tip when you go to a sit down restaurant, but do you tip when you go to a coffee shop like Starbucks that has a tip jar on the counter? Why or why not?"

No, I don't tip in fast foods. Thy'er not doing much so I don't see the point.

No, at the one I go to they are very slow, and I know it takes Starbucks awhile because they make it to order but it's just a bunch of teenagers goofing off.

Even though minimum wage is higher because they get tips they can pay less per hour. However the restaurant should require them to report their tips because if at the end of the day they make less then whatever minimum wage then they are suppose to pay them the difference

I get paid $3.05 plus tips. Sometimes it's worth it. Sometimes it's not.

If I'm paying in cash and get change back, ill toss it in a tip jar, but 9 times out of 10 I'm using card and dont carry cash on me so I won't. Restaurants with wait staff, bars, hair salons, etc i always tip.

I don't tip at all unless there's a little bowl out or something ... then again its just not something that's done or really expected here (Australia)

I have a family member in Missouri and she makes $4. She's taxed on 8% of her total sales...so her paycheck is almost nothing. It's about $125 a week. She literally lives off of her tips.

Yeah. I do. I know what the people working there make and it is NOT much.
If I'm already going there and making the choice to spend $4 on a drink, I can afford the tip.

I try not to put it in the jar, BTW. Usually there's an asshat manager that empties it into his own pocket at the end of the day. I give it directly to the person serving me. I give it to them after they've put the money for the purchase into their register, so there's no confusion about what's payment and what's a tip.

No, I dont. Honestly, making a coffee or latte cannot be that hard. They probably get at least $7-9 per hour and that is pretty damn good considering most people cannot even find jobs nowadays. I dont tip anyone unless its a sit down restaurant, hair/nails...etc. ..
