Dental Problems & Pregnancy
posted 5th Mar '07
I made this a topic because I have heard so many different things about going to the Dentist while pregnant. Heres my problem, I need a root canal very badly in one of my front teeth, I have been in serious pain for about 2 weeks now and can no longer take it. I am 17 weeks pregnant, I see my OB in 2 days, but I was wondering what other people think about this topic. Should I or shouldent I have work done while pregnant? Any advice would help!

honestly i wouldnt! ive heard that its very dangerous...and i thought that they wont even do one if they know that you are pregnant..because i was supposed to go get a filling but i didnt know at the time that you werent supposed to in pregnancy and i went in and they looked at me and said honey your pregnant you cant get a filling and i was like ummm ok! lol i had no idea but...they wouldnt even work on me even if i wanted to take tha chance.

I need a root canal VERY badly too... but I'm pretty sure (depending on your ob/gyn and dentist) that you can do it in the 2nd or 3rd trimester. So I would just ask your doctor what he/she thinks. It is still very important to keep up with your dental care while you're pregnant. Now, with that said, you can only get local anesthetics so it will hurt like a B**** lol unless you have a high tolerance for pain like that.

heya, i was supposed to get a root canal too, though i managed to get juat a really big filling, i was in agony whist my densist was drilling away, even after 2 pain shots, so the root wasnt dead at all, ask if thats a possibility, iv 2 go back after my babys born for 12 fillings!!!
most dental work is safe inc the x rays, my dentist put a temp filling cover over my silver filling to prevent any mercury getting into my system, smart dentist!
id defo go get it done though, you wanna avoid an excraction, thats even worse than a root canal

I was having severe tooth pain as well and needed work done on my mouth too. Since my pregnancy started my teeth seem to be getting worse. Luckily it was a back tooth and instead of going through the time, effort, and money of a root canal I got the tooth pulled. Decayed teeth in your mouth can cause serious health problems for you and your baby. I was very afraid of getting an xray while pregnant and I started to cry but the dentist would not take out my tooth without a panoramic xray. So they put two of those lead shields over me and took one xray. I got the tooth out with the novacaine shots minus the epinephrine. I feel so much better now that they are out. I also got a prescription toothpaste and mouth wash which I love becasue it makes my teeth hurt a lot less. Good luck!

honey just ask your dentist. if you're still in doubt call your ob. i had plenty of dental work done in my second trimester & all is well! the medicine they use to numb your mouth doesn't do anything to or harm the baby. and most general antibiotics produced these days are also safe for women to take during pregnancy. at the very least you could have the dentist perform a pulpotomy (sort of like a root canal, only not as stressful) which would give you comfort until after you deliver. hope you get some relief, dear!! i have dental problems plenty (apparently) when i'm carrying, so i know your pain. best of luck to you!

i just went to my ob and he gave me a paper with the things we can and cannot do!! one was going to the dentist... i am going tomm for a cleaning and i am 22 weeks. i think it is safe for any procedure after your second trimester but if you are not sure ask your ob and your dentist!!

Hey I need a root canal in the front as well I had almost got all my dental work taking care of up until now- I'm 5 weeks pregnant an having pain & irritated gums. I know I'm gonna have to put mine's off til' I get further along. I wish I would've gotten it taking care of when I had the filings & other work done (2 wisdoms) tooth pulled. I'm scared to take anything because back in Dec. 07 I was 10 wks pregnant and miscarried and I hope and pray that I don't have to go down that road again!
