Cavity at 2?

posted 4th Aug '12
Hey
My DD will be two next month and I don't know if it's just paranoia but I think she has a cavity and loose tooth. It is the right side molar and I saw there was a brown mark while brushing her teeth. So I tried touching it and after getting bitten twice by her i finally thought I felt it and it was loose. Her father said there's no way because she don't eat junk, only drinks water, and I brush her teeth everyday. But she does breast feed to sleep. I noticed again last night and again I swear it's loose.

I don't know what to do because its impossible to have her stay still and let me check without biting down hard. Can she have a cavity and loose tooth from just breast milk? To make matters worse our insurance got canceled bc some genious forgot to file the correct paperwork and I'm trying to fix it but the case workers are useless.

I don't know about the loose part, but yes, babies can get cavities from breastmilk.

Yes. Especially if you BF after her teeth are brushed. That would be like you drinking something sugary right before you went to bed.

Plus if she falls asleep before swallowing all of it the milk is just sitting against her teeth.

Thanks mamas. I brushed her tooth extra and I think the cavity was just a stain? I'm going to take her to the dentist though to be safe. I was reading articles of 3 and 4 year olds having over 8 cavities and needing general anesthesia to get their teeth fixed.

One mentioned a mom who refused to give her three year old general, which I understand , but they had to strap her to a board and hold her down and even with a local the one tooth took 30 mins. The girl needed nine fixed. I would rather give my DD general then be traumatized. I never had a cavity but could only imagine the pain. Then they mentioned a 4 year old who already had eight fixed a year before coming back because he had even more and while in the waiting room the parents gave him a can of soda to drink while waiting... Wtf?

My 21 month old has a gap between her front teeth and she jammed her fork in there and chipped both teeth and now she has a big cavity between her teeth. She also chipped the front tooth pretty good. The dentist won't do anything about it until she is aware of what is going on and will sit still to let them do their thing. They want her to come in for a bunch of short appointments to get used to going. She doesn't have another appointment until October but I can't see her behaving by then. I'm going to just tell them to sedate her and fix the damn thing or else I'm finding another dentist, I went with this one because nobody else would see her until she was 2 years old.
