Car seat question..

posted 4th Aug '12
So we have the Evenflo Embrace 35 Infant Car Seat -Alahambra car seat. I installed it in the car today (give us a couple weeks to get used to 3 car seats in the car lol) But this is the first infant car seat we've had in our SUV. Anyway, it has the latch hooks (yay!!) so am I supposed to use both the latch hooks and the lap/shoulder belt? Because I did. It just seemed a whole lot tighter than with just the belt. Sorry if this is a "stupid" post for some of you, I'd rather fix it now if it's not right. Should I take a picture to show you what it looks like? Thanks!

No just one or the other. In the manual it should say not to use both. It puts extra stress on the seat and could cause it to fail. Either work just fine, but never use both together.

my infant carrier and convertible both specifically say to NOT use both. Did you read the manual?

what she said. I would just put your knee on the seat to push it down when tightening the LATCH, that's what works best for me

Yeah I read the manual, that's how I knew how to latch it correctly. It said if it wobbled too much it was okay to use both. And it was REALLY wobbly with the seat belt so I looked for the latch hooks and latched them. Should I try just the latch hooks instead? It didn't mention anything about using both could cause it to fail; like I said, it said to use both if needed

If you put weight on the base while tightening the latch, it should be just fine.

I'd try just the hooks. Everything I've read has always said never use both. Ours moves up and down but not really side to side with the hooks. It's going to move some with either one because it's only mounted in the one location.

I did that when I tightened the latch to the hooks, I'm paranoid about it being too loose.

Clear as day says do not use latch system and seat belt. It says if your using a shoulder belt you may need some clip to get it to work properly. Not really sure I just skimmed.

I'll try just the hooks. I was more comfortable with those in the first place, the seat belt made it move sideways too much.

Why is this so different than the manual in the car seat? This girl specifically says not to use both but my paper manual says I can...

Using both can hinder the way the seat works in a crash, the belts are meant to stretch with an impact. Using both can put too much pressure on the seat and cause it to fail or break. The other ladies have given you great advice on how to install it tighter. You can find a tech in your area here, that will help you install it correctly for free:

Also, here are some videos from Evenflo on the basics of installing the original Embrace. They should show you some good tricks on getting it tight enough:
