Are Cloth Diapers Cheaper If...

posted 4th Aug '12
Are cloth diapers cheaper if you use a diaper service?

I know that after the initial investment, they would be cheaper if I was cleaning them myself, but I don't plan to do that, and I don't know if using a cleaning service would eliminate the saved money.

I'm not even sure if I will go with cloth diapers for various other reasons.. but I figured I should at least look into it..

I know nothing about this, but my mom said that you have to use pins to hold them closed.. I know that that's how it used to be done, but I thought maybe we'd have evolved some new sort of technology (velcro maybe?) to make that not an issue..

I still think it might be a bad idea because I'm fairly certain that my husband wouldn't change any diapers if I did it this way.. (and with two kids in diapers.. his ass needs to help me out sometimes).

But anyway, I thought I'd look into it and pick some BG brains on the topic.

I've never used a diaper service so I don't know what they run.

Washing them is not difficult at all, dump poo in the toilet, throw diaper in diaper pail. Wash on wash day (we do every other day).

There are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many kinds of diapers, and most are super easy to put on (just like a sposie).

depends on the cost of the diaper service. If their weekly or bi-weekly charge is less then a pack of disposables then yep

we are way passed the pins and folded squares now   Check out the cloth diaper thread in parents with infants

I just did some googling, there's Dirty Deeds, based out of Rochester.

It looks like you'd be saving a little bit, but not as much aqs if you bought diapers and washed them yourself.
Assuming you spend $40 a week on sposies (which is approximately what we were spending on sposies before we switched).
Four weeks is $100.
12 weeks is on sale right now for $290.

Looks like covers are $2 each for 4 weeks.

Thanks. I plan to look into it a little more.. and run it by my husband.. but if its going to keep him from being willing to change diapers, then its a no go either way. lol.

Diaper services are just about as expensive as disposables.

Seriously...$40 a week on disposables? How is that even possible? We don't even spend $40 a MONTH on disposables....

Also, no. They make them so they go on and off just like a disposable now. most diaper services use prefolds though- which can be held together with pins or snappis.

Even when he was exclusively breastfed as a newborn and was pooping EVERY diaper we didn't spend that much on disposables. I just find it amazing that people spend that much.

I last bought diapers (180 count box) in June...we started using them in early July, and STILL have some left. I think we spent $24.00 on that box.

are you buying the cheapest brand?? I dont know about there, but here a box of huggies is $33 on special and i can see my kid going through that in a week, maybe a week and a half. So i wouldnt say $40 is far off

I buy them at BJs...and yes, I do use the club brand. I see no point in paying so much money for Huggies or Pampers when all you are doing is throwing them away anyway. I understand that some kids have sensitivity issues and can only use one brand, but I have actually noticed that my kids were more sensitive to the NAME BRAND diapers than to the generics.
