Tantrums

posted 4th Aug '12
My daughter throws herself on the floor, or will hit me occasionally, but screams at the top of her lungs if I don't give her something she wants. She is 13 months old. I was in line running an errond and she saw another baby's bottle and started having a meltdown. It lasted for about 20 minutes.... I couldn't get her to stop.... someone finally handed me a juice bottle to give to her and she calmed down. She only takes her bottles at bedtime so I didn't have one. But things like this are happening more and more... if she sees keys and she can't have them, the same thing happens... she USED to listen very very well. When I said no, she would stop. She never touched things she shouldn't touch and if I smacked her hand she knew that meant don't touch. She even used to listen to "don't touch, just look". All that training has gone out the window... I need some tips on how to get my daughter to behave. Is that realistic at this age?

yes ignore it. If my son is like that i just throw him over my shoulder gets him to behave right away because he hate it.

Just ignore her. My DD is 2 and if she gets really upset I just put her in a quiet corner until she is calm.

I was ignoring her and everyone was looking at me like they were gonna call CPS... that's the hard part..

I know how you feel! My almost 15 month old daughter throws fits when she doesn't get what she wants, and people always stare at me like, "CAN YOU NOT CONTROL YOUR CHILD?"

You might want to consider removing her from that situation next time. Leave your cart, go out to your car or just somewhere else quiet and try to calm her down. Wait for it to pass. Then go back in and get your errand done.

I can't always do that. FOr example, I had already been waiting in line for 30 minutes and had another 30 to go.... if I left I would have started all over again and the same thing would have happened... otherwise I would do that.

Yikes. What were you waiting for? An hour is a long time to expect any child to behave, IMO.

yes its normal and i had that problem bad too. i tried everything! omgoodness. she used to hurt herself throwing herself back and bumping her head. so i spanked her for the first time and she never threw a tantrum like that again. if you dont wanna spank, thats cine. just thats what i did and it worked. i tried everything. but shell still complain and whine about stuff just no more throwing back, kicking, hitting, and screaming like that.
you might have good luck, so try the other stuff first. american baby and parenting.com have allot of good advice, it just didnt work for me.
good luck!
