Nursing and Prozac?

posted 15th May
I used to take Prozac several years ago for anxiety/depression. I switched to Wellbutrin a couple years ago and then when I got prego, I kind of quit taking it. I've been nursing for 9 months now and about 2 months ago I went to the doc to ask if I could start taking something again. I had read a lot of literature that said Prozac was the safest to take while nursing. But my doctor insisted Igo backon the Wellbutrin. I don't have insurance anymore so I preferred the prozac, since it's way cheap.Have any of you taken Prozac while you're nursing? I just want to know what some of your experiences are and what your doctors have told you.

they actually wouldnt let me nurse because i was on prozac... so i don't know what to tell ya... i mean, it was also partly due to the xanax too... even though my dr's had me on both during my pregnancy so you figure if it was gonna hurt him i would think it wouldve in utero but its all so confusing... every dr is different i guess...

I was/am nursing on Prozac. The main thing is that it can cause Slow Weight Gain after birth. I had to supplement with Formula because Cora lost over 10% of her birth weight. So now we do forumla during the day and nursing at night.

My doc said to try and take the meds right AFTER a feeding to give it time to filter through the body, so it won't be so "concentrated" in the breastmilk.

Yeah, that slow weight gain was the side effect I read about too...I don't have to worry about that though, my daughter is 9 months and about 23 lbs already! Heehee! She's a chunker. Plus, she is on solids now too, so she only nurses a few times a day, it's not her main source of nutrition.

Thanks for the replies!
