Newborns go through a lot of diapers, so I plan for at least 12 diapers per day. An older infant might only go through 8. So if you wash every other day, you will need about 24 changes for a newborn, etc.
Most newborn diapers fit until about 12ish lbs or so which is when most one size diapers start to fit well. It is going to depend on your baby's build. If they are short and stocky they will grow out of them before a baby who is long and skinny, even if they are the same weight.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you can recoup most of your money if you sell them once baby grows out of them unless you save them for another child. I've had luck on here http://forum.baby-gaga.com/about1829164.html
and also at http://www.diaperswapper.com .
I have heard of people doing the same. I have done it with an unlined cover and a flat or prefold because I can wipe them out but not with a pocket diaper. Most pocket diapers come with a single insert for each cover so I don't see the point, kwim?
