breast milk

posted 15th May
How long do things stay in your milk. I really want to drink coffee today but I don't want to give it to my baby. How many times would I need to pump and dump to enjoy my coffee. Also how long does alcohol stay in breast milk and really spicy mexican food. I am having cravings and have tons of milk stored into the freezer to indulge a bit. Please let me know.

They real disadvanage about breastfeeding is that it always stays in yer milk nomatter what so if you want to breastfeed that bad stick to the diet you need to bc if you dnt yer baby is the one that has to pay for it.

At my breastfeeding class they said you can have up to 3 alcoholic beverages wo it affecting the breastmilk. She just recommended that you pump before going out so that it's a few hours after your last drink befor eyou have to feed the baby again. I don't know about coffee though.......decaf?

Ah, the myths of breastfeeding. There is no set diet for nursing moms besides a healthy one. You can have a cup of coffee in the morning. A cup. Not 3 or 4 or drink it all day. You can also have a glass of wine or a beer. Again, not 3 or 4 or enough to get shitfaced. As for spicy foods, eat them. If your baby doesn't like it, s/he will let you know. There's no rule that you have to cut out any foods while nursing. Just because it makes you gassy doesn't mean that it's going to affect your baby. You may be able to handle milk just fine but your baby might have a milk protein allergy (like mine does). It's all trial and error. So, eat those chiles bathed in cheese sauce and see what happens!

who told you all this and why did you feel the need to pass it on when it's complete bs?

op- have a cup of coffee. have a beer. read up on breastfeeding while you have your drinks of choice. there is typically no reason to pump and dump unless you will not be nursing for a while and need to relieve some pressure.

My LC told me that it's ok to have a cup of coffee (even though I'm not a coffee drinker) I do drink pepsi though, it's my pick me up in the morning ( I KNOW not the best choice, but some choose coffee, as I choose Pop). Anyway she said no more then 2 cups, I try and limit myself to one pop a day, and then drink water, or sugarfree drinks such as crystal light, or sugar free kool-aid. My LC also told me drink to thirst and eat to hunger and my milk supply will be fine. She made a good point, think about all those woman in Africa that only eat rice, and have fat babies with ton's of rolls. Good Point

I've spoken to my doctor and a lactation consultant, they both have told me that you can have anything you'd like just in moderation. So you can have you coffee, alcohol and the spicy food as long as you don't go over board. In general just be onhealthy balanced diet. So there is no "disadvantage" to breast feeding. Remeber to be careful what type of medications you do take, for that ask your doctor.

While I do agree that keep a balanced diet is beneficial for the mother, our bodies are designed so that our milk is the best thing for our babies even if we're malnourished. Babies can react to different foods but it doesn't mean that it's a danger. I would just pump a little before you drink coffee if you're worried, but I don't think it's so necessary either.
