Depends. Is it you adopting or your SO?
My DH adopted my son. Our case was fairly simple. I think it took a month or two, only because we had to send notice to the bio (or sperm donor as I call him). Then after notice is sent, they set a court date. Sperm donor didn't show to court and the adoption was signed then and there. I was lucky that it was that easy.

It may depend on your state. If you don't have the address for the person it has to stay publicly published in a newspaper for 3 weeks I think. At least in Arkansas.

We just did it. It varies on your local court system. Basically if you got married and the bio father gave up his rights it's very easy to file and go through the system quickly. It took us a year of fighting with them because there is no "known" father and he was conceived out of a rape. Dh got a smurffy lawyer and was super stupid. He gave this lawyer the name of the guy when I wasn't there. So we had to deal with that.. So a 6month process turned into more than a year process. They had to keep posting about the adoption in the paper. It was really embarrassing

I have a friend who went through this. The biological father wouldn't sign over his rights and it ended up not going through.

What if the father is not on the birth certificate and you have nothing to do with them

You just have to notify them, not get their permission. They have to show up in court and object to the adoption and then take it from there.

You could do the "I don't know who it is" thing and just post that the child is being adopted in the paper. But my DH is an attorney in a smaller town and so we didn't wanna go that route. Kinda looks bad on him and his choices lol

How long have you lived in NC?
Personally I would do a consult with a local attorney. It's usually only like $30 for a consultation (well around here haha) and they can tell you where to go from there.
