flu, anytime of the year?

Ok, I am sure that what I am about to ask may make me sound like one of the dumbest people ever but I seriously don't know so that's why I am asking.
A friend told me her daughter has been diagnosed with the flu at her doctors office. Another friend is calling her out saying that the flu is usually only during certain times of the year and this isn't the flu season. Her daughter is sick, I don't like the fact she is being called a liar but is Emily right? Is the flu only during certain times of the year? I've never questioned this before.
