When did you start cutting down at work?

posted 1st Aug '12
I'm 21 weeks today. I work with developmentally disabled adults ranging in age from 27-73 at an assisted living home, so I'm up on my feet my whole shift usually.

I'm debating when I should start cutting down on hours, but I know that's different with everyone. It's a physical job and I love it so much but I'm at the point that I told myself I'm not taking any extra hours, and right now my body hates me. At home, even just taking a shower then fixing breakfast I'll be in so much pain, but then as soon as I sit down it alleviates it a good bit.

So when did you start cutting down at work if you did, and what brought you to that point?

I had the same type of job and had to quit because I was so sick and couldn't take care of the ladies in the home. It was hard for me to quit because I loved the job but I have a job when I decide to go back it just may not be in the same work home. I think if your body is telling you it's too much then I would start cutting a couple hours here and there.

Yeah that sounds like what I'm doing, they'll let me take time off but then they'll probably switch what home I'm at. I love the house I work with so much now though and it's super convenient cause it's a mile from my apartment.

My boss is in tomorrow so I'm going to talk to her then, and I have an Obgyn appt today so I'm going to talk to my dr too.

I worked in palliative care so very challenging and did 12 hour shifts. I cut down at about 6 months and left on maternity as soon as I could, the manual handling was getting a bit too much and there's only so many light duties you can do.

i had two jobs when i was pregnant. one was a factory job and the other was as a hostess at a restaurant. I quit the factory job because it was in the morning and i was always sick and it was effecting my work but i stayed at the hostess job until 2 weeks before i gave birth.

I worked in an ER. I worked 40 hours a week until I popped. I literally went to work on Friday and my water broke Saturday.

I work as a hair stylist so I am on my feet all the time too. I am 34 weeks now and I had to go to L&D 2 days ago. They said I could still work but cut my hours to 4 hour shifts. So I am just now cutting back. This is my 3rd pregnancy. With my first I quit working at 24 weeks cause I had so much pain and I couldn't walk much cause my son was on my siactic nerve the whole tile time. Good luck to you!!!

I'm a waitress so I get the whole being on your feet all day it really did a number on my back I would lay in bed and couldn't even turn over without excruciating pain ...I cried one time cuz I couldn't get off the toilet lol...
I went from 6 days to 4 days around 24 weeks and took maternity leave at 34 weeks due to real strong contractions from over doing it really...we were short handed a lot so it didn't help tryin run around like a maniack lol I'm sure it was a sight to see

I just quit working a couple weeks ago, which was about a month before my DD. Had I not switched to night shift, I would have gone another week or so probably. But the 12 hour overnights were too much on me, plus I was the only nurse for 22 psych patients, so it was getting dangerous. Luckily I got to sit a lot, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do it.
