How much does your 12 month old eat?

posted 1st Aug '12
I was just wondering how much your 12 month old eats.

Do they eat proper meals or little tid bits?

Do they eat their food or "play" with it?

What kind of things do you feed them?

Do they drink a lot of water?

Sophia turns 1 next week and I am always worrying that I am not feeding her enough or she isn't feeding herself enough!

Also anything other than breast milk she struggles with even now! She never got the hang of beakers of any kind but she will open her mouth and drink from a cup if I pour the contents in slowly.. but even then its still only a few sips every now and then. Does anyone else have this problem?

*WATCHING*

I wonder the same thing. LO will 1 on August 9th. I still try to give him his pureed food, along with tidbits of what we're eating or the Graduates little meals. My LO has mostly formula. He takes sips of water here and there but, not much.

He tends to just shove food in his mouth so I have to break it up for him and let him finish that or he'll shovel it all in his mouth, and choke.

He sounds very similar to Sophia! Your reply alone has made me feel better.

I just have visions of other little 12 month olds eating big 3 course meals or something and here I am offering Sophia a carrot from my plate!

Her days vary though. Today she has had a banana for breakie, a little bit of cheese and ham bagel for lunch and a whole yogurt pot.

Nothing but breast milk to drink though. Its almost a fight to get her to drink anything different.. but a careful fight as I don't want to spill the cup over her and she won't drink from anything with a mouth piece AT ALL. >

Max won't take to a sippy cup either, he'll sort of drink from it but only if I hold it, he doesn't like the water or juice of any flavour, not sure what to do with him really, I just make him more milk as thats all he will drink!

My LO is 15 months old and now is interested in every food he can get his hands on even fruits   that makes me proud lol but 3 months ago he would barely eat anything that I made so he would only eat cereal in the morning and maybe graduate puffs at night or thru the day if i was lucky..hell it still takes him all day to drink a cup of water and he is on %2 milk now (which i should have done a lot sooner due to puking) He still pukes up any kind of juice and gets the runs   it sucks only being able to give him water and only sometimes milk

Yeah, Benjamin will not drink out of a sippy cup, at all. EVER. He flips out.

He usually has his morning bottle and about an hour later I'll make him breakfast. Sometimes, I'll do yogurt other times I'll do pureed fruit and give him that and some oatmeal cereal.

He naps around 9am and wakes back up around 11.

I give him some pureed veggies or I'll make something for both of us. (It depends on whats in the house that day)

Around 1, I give him another bottle and it's just around the time he gets tired again..He's usually napping by 2.

After he wakes up, I usually give him a few snacks...Some cheerios or something until dinner, and depending on what I make, I just feed him off of my plate. If we're having something like, steak that he can't chew, I'll still feed him some of my veggies and potatoes but, I'll give him a pureed veggie to make up for it.

My 1 year old has a LOT during the day. (She's always been a healthy eater.)

Bottle- She'll have a bottle when she wakes up 7AM
Breakfast- Some actual cereal, usually 1/4-1/2 of a little bowl
Snack- Something to munch on during this time. Maybe more cereal.
Bottle- A bottle around 11AM to help get her to sleep.
-Wakes up 30 min to an hour later-
Lunch- 1 Banana, or a Gerber Graduates meal.
Snack- A graham cracker or 2.
Bottle- A bottle for her afternoon nap. Around 2:45-3:45.
-Wakes up 30 min to an hour later-
Snack- Some blueberries or some thing else.
Dinner- Whatever we eat. She usually eats a whole plate of what we have.
Bottle- A bottle around 7:30-9:00 to help her sleep for the night.
-Asleep until 7am-

Her bottles are about 7-9 oz per bottle. She's a healthy eater, lol. She won't do baby food at all, she refuses it and knocks it to the floor. So we gave up on that.

J is almost 14 months and is still very similar. She barely touches breakfast but will eat a bit for lunch and chows dinner. She still nurses quite regularly throughout the day. She will use a sippy but still doesn't drink most of the water in it..she'll kind of spit/dribble it out as she drinks.
I think it's probably pretty common for breast fed babies to eat like this. I think as long as your offering a variety of foods and encouraging her to eat then she'll eventually get the hang of it.
I have noticed that J prefers certain textures over others. She doesn't like anything soft or slimy. She loves meats and will eat veggies and fruits as long as they are still firm. She loves crackers.

That's pretty normal...they always want what everyone else is eating.

Yeah, it must be the forbidden aspect that makes them go nuts.

But, he has pretty much plateaued as far as gaining weight but, a few ladies on here said it's pretty normal at 12-18 months to kind of slow down.

Thank you everyone read all of these all I found really interesting. Especially the drinking. Sounds like drinking little amounts at this stage is very common. Makes me feel so much better!

Happy to know a lot of babies still eat frequent tid bits instead of giant meals too.

thank you xxxx

My youngest is 18 months now.
Has a milk bottle when he gets up and 1 at night time before bed
Every other drink during the day is water and he drinks a lot of it!
Breakfast is normally cereal, toast or egg on toast. Then some fruit.
A snack, sometimes 2 during the morning.
Lunch.
Naptime.
Snack.
Dinner.
Bottle.
Bed.

I don't worry about if he eats enough, if he's hungrier than usual he let's me know. He takes me to the pantry or fridge.
