Water for a 5 month old?

posted 1st Aug '12
Are 5 month olds supposed to have water? My sisters FF baby has water out of the cup shes drinking from, she doesnt know exactly how much, and my BF 5 month old does not. Shes on solids once a day though. We were out to dinner tonight and she was letting him drink from her cup, and DD had just been fed, so I let her have some water too and she loved it. It was only a tiny bit. Was that bad? Ive heard about water toxicity, so how much is too much at her age? Id hate for it to do her any harm

Aidans pedi said to never give him water before a year old because they get enough from the formula or breastmilk.

I don't think they need water but i don't think its harmful to give them cooled boiled water. My SO used to freak out on really hot days saying the kids needed water when they were tiny but i kept telling him breast milk is enough to keep them hydrated.

My midwife and health visitor both told me it was perfectly fine and safe to give him it... As long as it had only been boiled once and cooled xXx

Oh well, he seems to enjoy the change and to be honest it hasn't done any harm. He doesn't have it that often, only in warm/close weather and he only has an oz xXx

Ive just brought her a sippy cup because she was trying to drink from some other kids sippy at playcenter, but I just put expressed milk it it because I dont know if she will like water, she seems to like the sippy alot better than a bottle
